Each year, several members of the PebbleCreek Quilters (PCQ) create an “opportunity quilt” to raise funds to support their community service projects and to buy and maintain equipment in the fiber arts room.
The 2021 opportunity quilt, Riverbed, was designed by world-renowned quilter Judy Martin, and is highlighted in her book, Piece ‘N’ Play Quilts. Ms. Martin’s quilt design was inspired by a Japanese garden. She chose fabric and colors to reflect earth, stone, sand, and vegetation, as well as the varying undertones.
Batik fabrics, donated by a former PebbleCreek quilter, were chosen to meet the desired effect of Ms. Martin’s design. PCQ members Diane Bashare, Jackie Cameron, Sandy Crabtree, Nancy Davidson, Joanne Krantz, Marlene Kuskia, Linda Labenz, Marka Locker, Irene Lukes, Barbara Maurer, Beverly Mitchell, Carol Moonan, and Helen Phillips met to cut fabric and to assemble blocks to create the beautiful quilt, appropriately named Riverbed. Karen Bogadi custom quilted the masterpiece in approximately 80 hours of work.
The quilt, Riverbed, was often displayed at various locations during 2021. Tickets were sold, offering opportunities to win the quilt.
The drawing was held at PCQ’s December meeting and holiday luncheon. Jill Hilder was the recipient of the 2021 opportunity quilt. She is thrilled with the quilt and plans to display it in her guest room. Jill is especially impressed with the signature block on the back of the quilt. The block includes all the signatures of the PCQ members who helped create Riverbed.
The 2022 opportunity quilt, Oopsie Daisy, will make its formal debut at the upcoming, biannual The Art of Quilting Show in the Creative Arts Center on Sunday, March 20. Additional information will be published near the date of the quilt show.
