Quilters Waste No Fabric

Carole Schumacher believes that no fabric should ever be wasted. This includes the selvages of the fabric. A fabric selvage is the tightly woven edge that runs along each side of a piece of fabric. Selvages usually include little dots that show the colors that are included in the fabric. Those little dots are helpful to match colors or find colors that contrast or blend with the fabric.  Selvages usually include the name of the manufacturer and sometimes the designer and the name of the design. Selvages are generally less than an inch wide on the end of the fabric.

Quilters usually cut off the selvages and throw them out. Not Carole. Carole collects selvages, cuts them into strips, and sews them into blocks to make quilts. It’s not easy to sew fabric together that is not very wide, but Carole has mastered this technique.

Carole recently taught a class on creating a “selvage quilt.” We thank you Carole for sharing your talents with members of the PebbleCreek Quilting (PCQ) Club.
