The Hiking Club goes on several overnight trips during the season to areas too far away for day hikes. On November 9 club members headed to Las Vegas, a location better known for gambling and shows, for three days of hiking in Red Rock Canyon, White Rock Canyon and Bowl of Fire. Just north of Lake Mead, Bowl of Fire is an impressive area of massive sandstone formations which have been carved and shaped by water and wind over thousands of years and which glow fiery red in sunlight. The hikers enjoyed what can best be described as a free-form meander through this area, allowing close-up and personal views of the formations. The Hiking Club enjoys local hikes all around the valley, as well as overnight trips to more distant areas. The club meets in the Tuscany Ballroom on the third Thursday throughout the hiking season; visit the club’s website at pchikers.org for more information and pictures.

November 13 was a sunny fall day and perfect for an easy 8.9 mile hike in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in nearby Scottsdale. The hike was a scenic loop through the relatively flat terrain of historic Brown’s Ranch which spanned 44,000 acres and was a working cattle ranch well into the late 1900s. Scenery in the preserve was outstanding, including massive rock formations and several rare crested saguaros. The hikers enjoyed a leisurely lunch at Cathedral Rock and stopped for a short break beside giant Balanced Rock before returning to the Granite Mountain trailhead to complete the hike. The club hikes five days a week during the regular season (September through April) and explores new trails for the upcoming season during the summer; visit the club website at pchikers.org for more information and photos.

On November 23, on a hike in Sedona, Lynn Warren reached 4,000 miles hiking with the PebbleCreek Hiking Club. Lynn is only the third hiker to reach this milestone and he did so in only four and a half years. Hikers joining Lynn on the hike included (left to right) Marilyn Reynolds, Bill Halte, Clare Bangs, Lynn Warren, Steve Martin and Leah Martin. As you can see in the background, Sedona has some very colorful rock formations. The club does hikes all over the valley and as far away as Sedona and Prescott. And there are a couple of overnight hikes each season to areas within six to eight hours driving time (Las Vegas, Moab, etc.). For more information about the club, including more photos, please visit our website at pchikers.org.
