On Nov. 10, 2022, Larry Burnson made a hole-in-one on the 8th hole of the Eagle’s Nest course. He made this super shot while playing in a PCMGA regular Thursday men’s golf event. As such, Larry now qualifies to share in the annual hole-in-one prize along with Tom Sandgren, Mike Christensen, and Tim Niccum.
The 8th hole was playing 136 yards from the blue tees to a front-left pin placement. With mild wind conditions, he hit his 8-iron straight at the hole with a nice high trajectory. The ball landed just onto the green and rolled into the hole for all to see. His playing partners Kurt Eleam, Steve Temple, and John McCrickard all went wild. This foursome had started the day on hole number 9. Larry was not having his best day as he said, “At least I helped on the last hole.” He also said to Kurt, “At least I don’t have to putt on this hole!” John said, “At least you’re buying beer,” which he did.
This was Larry’s second hole-in-one in 56 years of playing golf. His first one came in 2003 while playing the 12th hole, a 185-yard par 3 at Idlewild Country Club in Flossmoor, Ill. At that club, each participating member replenishes the hole-in-one fund each time a member makes one. With 230 members each paying $10, Larry’s prize was $2,300. That was the good news. The bar bill amounted to over $1,800. Ouch!
Larry was born and raised in Chicago, Ill. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at Lewis University. He earned his Master’s degree in Public Administration at DePaul University. His entire 42-year career was spent in law enforcement. With 26+ years in Matteson, Ill., he worked his way up from rookie to Chief of Police. Then another 14-plus years as Police Chief in Homewood, Ill. Both of these Chicago area towns had populations of approximately 20,000 residents.
Larry retired in 2016 and in March 2021, he and wife Nancy (a retired nurse) moved to PebbleCreek. They love it here!
Congrats on this super shot!
