Have you seen a beautiful quilt that you loved and wondered about the story behind it? Have you considered the fabric and the hours spent sewing the quilt?
The 2022 PebbleCreek Quilters’ (PCQ) opportunity quilt, Oopsie Daisy, is a good example of a great story to tell.
For years, Cheryl McGovern had the quilt pattern, Oopsie Daisy, which was designed by quilter and textile historian Darlene Zimmerman. Cheryl thought the pattern was perfect for 1930s reproduction fabric. When quilter Tori Benz-Hillstrom donated a box of fabric to the PCQ, Cheryl immediately went to work adding to the fabric supply from her stash of reproduction fabric. Debbie Arsenaut, Mary Coombs, Cathy Howell, and Helen Phillips joined Cheryl to spend five hours cutting the fabric to the pattern’s specifications. They each assembled blocks that were sewn together to create the quilt top. Cheryl hand-appliqued the 20 daisies, and Debbie hand-quilted around each flower, as well as machine-quilted the entire quilt.
Cheryl estimated that the 79 by 96 quilt has a total of 21 yards of fabric and more than 100 hours of work from the team of five quilters.
The 1930s reproduction quilt Oopsie Daisy will be featured at The Art of Quilting quilt show in the Creative Arts Center on Sunday, March 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase. The opportunity quilt drawing is scheduled for December 2022.
Funds raised from the sale of the opportunity quilt raffle tickets are used by the PCQ to purchase supplies and equipment to complete community projects. Some of the projects completed in 2021 and donated to local agencies are:
500 Go with the Flow bags
255 quilts
87 dog beds
80 pillow cases
68 zippy stripy bags
50 hope bags
44 fidget mats
37 baby blankets
31 adult clothing protectors
19 breast cancer pillows
1 afghan
These items, as well as others, were donated to Hospice of the Valley, Abrazo Hospital, Southwest Family Advocacy, New Life Center, Natalie’s House, and the Breast Cancer Support Group of PebbleCreek.
So next time you see a quilt you admire, you have an idea of the vision, time, effort, dedication, and possible purpose that is part of the quilt’s story.
