Unit Happenings

Unit 42B Party

Tom Bose

On Feb. 6, the residents of Unit 42B got together for the first time in almost two years. Several of our neighbors organized an outdoor event, utilizing the cul-de-sac they live on.

There was plenty of food and drink for everyone. In addition, there was a cornhole tournament enjoyed by many.

It was great to finally be able to see our neighbors and once again interact with them. A great time was had by all. A big thank you goes out to the organizers. We look forward to doing this frequently in the future.

Unit 44 Survives a Crash

Spike Razem

When was the last time you received your mail delivered directly to your front door? That’s what happened to Unit 44 due to our mailboxes being destroyed by a hit-and-run pest spray truck on Jan. 7. Once the crash occurred, the Goodyear Police and our Community Patrol were soon on the scene, thanks to the quick reporting action by residents Darrell Livingston and Mark Eichkorn. Luckily, no one was injured. The Home Team driver who sped away from the scene was fired, and the USPS immediately responded to correct the problem. Residents received efficient front door postal service for the next two weeks and soon got shiny new mailboxes with new keys.

As if that excitement wasn’t enough, the unit members got together on Jan. 27 for a fun, successful DOTP (Drinks On The Patio) at the home of Barbara Kamm. More than 40 neighbors enjoyed some delicious pizza and pasta, along with a wide array of tasty appetizers, side dishes, and desserts. The weather cooperated nicely for an excellent sunset photo, and, as evidenced by the smiling faces, a good time was had by all. Spirited beverages were flowing well and some good, resultant conversations included various topics, one of which was the crazy crash of our mailboxes.

Exciting times seem to be non-stop in Unit 44!

Unit 51 Valentine’s Day Get-Together

Janet Miazga

February brought a special reason for the gals of Unit 51 to get together—Valentine’s Day! This month’s hosts, Bevy Hogan and Jennifer Yelvington, went all out with decorations, table arrangements, and goodie cups with individual fortunes. They chose Papa Paul’s Brick Oven Pizza & Pasta in Litchfield Park for the February Ladies’ Luncheon. It was a great choice, as ample servings of delicious food were enjoyed by all 13 attending. Everyone was excited to be getting back to socializing and catching up.

Unit 51 January Ladies’ Luncheon

Janet Miazga

The ladies of Unit 51 began the new year with their monthly luncheon gathering on Jan. 13, at Babbo Italian Eatery, one of Goodyear’s newer restaurants on McDowell. Seventeen neighbor friends, plus one gal’s visiting daughter, enjoyed the menu selection they were given and the opportunity to get together to visit and chat once again. Many thanks go out to Jackie Vandenberg for hosting the January luncheon. We all look forward to the next one!

Unit 52 January Luncheon

Liz Gibson

Despite last-minute cancellations that were COVID related and airline cancellation related, the ladies who lunch in Unit 52 enjoyed a delightful chat fest and dining time at PF Chang’s on Jan. 24.

As life is slowly normalizing once again, Unit 52 is looking forward to another busy year and a new save the date information sheet will be sent to the unit shortly.

Unit 53 Happy Hour

Sandy Stephens

Dave and Janet Valentini and Dave and Patsy Nannini hosted our Unit 53 January happy hour at the Oasis Pool. It was a big turnout, with 61 neighbors enjoying the perfect weather and delicious food. Dave and Bob grilled up 100 hot dogs and everyone brought a side dish. It was nice to get together with neighbors both old and new to Unit 53. Michelle McKee has taken over organizing happy hours for Unit 53.

Unit 54 Ladies’ Luncheon

Olé! That was our fun saying on Jan. 24 at Old Pueblo Cafe and Pub in Litchfield. We ate outdoors on a beautiful, 72-degree day and enjoyed lunch items, such as enchiladas, ribeye tacos, chili rellenos, taco salad in a crisp corn shell, plus their homemade chips in baskets on our tables. With such an active unit playing and doing things like pickleball, tennis, golf, and mah jongg, it can be challenging to schedule a luncheon. Those who were able to attend were Karen Rubsam, Judy Kettlewell, Trish Wagner, Sheri Spirek, Cindy Klein, Cindy Strong, Cheryl Kunkle, Patty Klepinger, Mary Jane Broom, Sally Mills, Nancy Bartusch, Joette Lookabaugh, and Barb Dunson.

Those who were held captive included Jim Downey, Bruce Banks, Gerry Hibbard, Dale Scanlon, Tim Scanlon, Barb Downey, Lynn Banks, Jackie Bachmann, Janelle Watts, Paula Hupka, and Elmer Greenbank.

Unit 62A Escape Room Event

Toni Erickson

Help! Unit 62A has neighbors who couldn’t escape from the Twisted Riddles Escape Rooms on Jan. 28. They were divided into two teams and were given the opportunity to work together and use their reasoning and problem-solving skills to escape before it was too late, but it was too late for these neighbors! They shared great stories following the game at N-Dub Pizza Pub on Estrella Parkway. This event comes highly recommended.

Happy hour at the Henson’s

Unit 62A Happy Hour

Toni Erickson

Unit 62A began 2022 out with a fun evening at Janet and Ernie Henson’s for the January happy hour. They hosted the 62A neighbors in their beautiful home and backyard on Jan. 21. It was a wonderful evening with the great Arizona temperatures enabling us to dine outdoors.

Unit 62B Ladies’ Luncheon

Judy Freidman

The ladies of Unit 62B have been enjoying monthly luncheons in various restaurants the past few years, and our January luncheon was held in the Chianti Room.

It was hosted by Shelly Carnevale, and she had beautifully decorated the room with a mirrored centerpiece and vases filled with pink flowers. Each guest received a wine glass individually decorated by Nancy Moore, Laura Variola, Jill Derkits, Shelly Carnevale, and Lin Ochs.

Shelly led us in bingo and challenging trivia games, with winners given a bottle of pink prosecco.

Our unit was completely built out in 2017, and our first social committee was formed with a team of enthusiastic ladies: Kay Skripka, Lin Ochs, Shelly Carnevale, and Jill Derkits. They spent countless hours planning events, including block parties, bowling outings, Mardi Gras street parties, a poker run, the holiday lights cart tour, a State Farm Stadium tour, and many more activities. After four years of leading our unit, they have decided to let others have all the fun.

We really appreciated all their hours of work and dedication, and they were gifted with a beautiful flower arrangement and a gift card to the Babbo Italian Eatery restaurant.

Kudos to the catering staff for serving us a delicious lunch and dessert and for the wonderful, attentive service. A great afternoon of friendship and fun was had by all.
