Imagine this—you are at a dance event or a wedding reception, and the DJ is amazing. A song comes on that you just have to dance to, so you get up, get on the floor and … jump up and down. Maybe your hands go in the air; maybe you sing along. We call this dancing. This is not dancing. This is jumping enthusiastically to music. Is it fun? Yes. Is it dancing? No.
Ballroom and swing are, at their heart, social dances. They are designed in such a way that once you know how to do them, you can dance with someone you have just met even if you don’t speak the same language, and that level of connection and communication between two strangers as they create art is what makes the social dances so beautiful.
There are ballroom and Latin dances like the waltz, tango, cha-cha, and rumba; swing dances like the East Coast, West Coast, Lindy Hop, and Charleston; and Latin dances like the salsa, bachata, and Argentine tango. Some dances are in the same family, like the cha-cha and the rumba. They are both ballroom-style Latin dances, making it easy to learn them together.
Knowing a dance such as the waltz allows you to be able to meet someone totally random and dance a full song with them as you actively participate in the creation of art for nothing more than the love of it. It is one of the purest forms of human connection that one can experience and can sometimes feel magical.
The Ballroom Dance Club Offers Weekly Group Dance Lessons
Ballroom social dancing can help in making friends and engaging in the PebbleCreek community. The Ballroom Dance Club not only has monthly dance events September through April, but we also provide weekly group dance lessons from Beginning Swing, to the more sophisticated tango. The best part? It’s a lifelong skill. Once you learn how to dance, you have that knowledge forever.
Ballroom Dancing is social dancing, and it’s not for everyone, but once you are hooked, you may never imagine living without it. It can enrich one’s life in so many ways from meeting new people anywhere you travel and allowing you to engage in a gorgeous art form while simply doing something for fun. Now, when you go to a dance party, you will know what to do on the dance floor for any song—not just enthusiastically jumping to music. It is so much better. So, I ask: Why don’t we dance?
