Patricia Ingalls

The ladies of Unit 33 enjoyed lunch, amid views of the White Tank Mountains, at Verrado Grille at Verrado Golf Club in Buckeye on Sept. 8. Everyone enjoyed relaxing and reconnecting after their summer beat-the-heat travels. Flo Slezak and Pat Ingalls hosted the gathering.

Attendees at the Unit 44 men’s lunch include (L-R):  Wayne Thomas, Mark Eichkorn, Spike Razem, Walt Saal, Frank Tissell, Bob Olson, Doug Kirkpatrick, Darrell Livingston, Don Paxton, and Dan Harris (photographer).

Last Unit 44 Men’s Lunch of 2026

Dan Harris

On Sept. 2, 10 hungry men gathered at the Pub Stop inside the Desert Diamond White Tanks Casino for the last Unit 44 men’s lunch of 2026. After this, it’s back to monthly breakfasts as usual—presumably because these lunches were getting too ambitious for some metabolisms.

The desert heat was brutal, but the covered garage and long air-conditioned walk through the casino offered welcome relief before the group noshed on the restaurant’s finest antinutritional fare.

Things got off to a misguided start, though, when the group organizer boldly claimed the biggest table in the back. Several men followed in sheep-like formation to also take their seats. Only then did a server point out a table for 10 already set and waiting for them. So several men, faces red with embarrassment, made the walk of shame over to the pre-prepared table.

Then the drinking contest began. While most ordered sodas or water, two revelers went for frothy beverages. One chose a 16-ounce golden brew. The other ordered a 25-ounce dark Irish stout and promptly challenged his companion to upsize. Game on!

So as the men ate and traded the latest world events, Unit 44 news, and gossip, the two macho revelers pounded away at their brews. The rest of the table provided snarky commentary on the “fashion show” unfolding on the Pub Stop’s giant screens—a 1970s-era basketball rerun complete with short-shorts, knee-high socks, and hairstyles that should have stayed in the past. At the end, Reveler Two proudly displayed an empty stein. Reveler One, still nursing an inch of golden liquid, declared a draw on the grounds that his brew packed more alcohol. True gentlemen, they agreed to call it even and headed home for well-earned afternoon naps.

Sweet dreams, everyone—may your livers forgive you by breakfast!

Oh-MI! Unit 44’s Dynamic Duo Celebrates Their Home State

Jean Harris

Faygo pop, Oh-MI! Detroit-style Jet’s Pizza and National Coney Island hot dogs, Oh-MI! Better Made brand potato chips, Oh-MI! Sanders dark chocolate sea salt caramel candy and hot fudge cream puffs, bumpy cakes, and Mackinaw Island Fudge, Oh-MI!

Unit 44’s Debbie and Ron Baron came up with a brilliant idea for August 2026’s ladies’ lunch. Hailing from Clinton Township, Michigan (MI), the Adorable Dynamic Duo put together a menu of their favorite Michigan foods, complete with a history of those foods and some fun anecdotes of their life together before retirement in Arizona.

The Baron’s table was set with the University of Michigan Go Blue plates, cups, and napkins. The food was set out with special touches such as table tents from Jet’s Pizza and National Coney Island, and take-home magnets to order Jet’s Pizza (available locally in Arizona!).

It is worth a Google search to learn about the origins of their chosen Michigan favorites. Of note is a tidbit about Detroit-style pizza. Debates have raged between Chicagoans and New Yorkers over the best pizza style, but Detroit has its own lore and followers. The magic comes from steel pizza pans inspired by the Motor City and still made in Metro-Detroit today. Detroit pizza pans originated in 1946 at Buddy’s Rendezvous Tavern, repurposing rectangular, heavy-duty blue steel trays sourced from local automotive manufacturing plants. Jet’s Pizza adopted the idea of square pans when they opened in 1978.

Sharing the things we love with the people we love is why Unit 44 remains a special group of PebbleCreekers. We raise a glass of Faygo to Debbie and Ron and say, Oh-MI!

Unit 51 Ladies’ Luncheons Are Back!

Janet Miazga

Summer is winding down and fall is on our doorstep, so the Unit 51 Ladies’ Luncheons are back on the calendar. Since many had not yet returned in September, we only had a small group of seven but enjoyed catching up at Eagle’s Nest restaurant. The table was decorated with warm fall colors and the girls each received a potholder with an autumn design. We welcomed one of our newest neighbors, Kim Robb, and talked about what we had done this summer, as well as our upcoming travel plans. It was really nice to get together and we look forward to our monthly luncheons.

Unit 52 Returns—With a Great Start!

After an extended “vacation,” the verdict is in: Unit 52 is officially back! Eighteen women gathered for the ever-popular Ladies’ Luncheons, at the Breakaway Sports Bar & Grill. If our first event was any indication, we have revised a very happy (and very well-fed) tradition. This luncheon was a huge success with delicious food, laughter, lively conversation, and the wonderful opportunity for new neighbors to get to know one another and old friendships renewed. Judging by the smiles, chatter, and enthusiasm, we are already looking forward to the next one on Oct. 7!

Unit 61 Ladies Bunco

Laurie Miller

On Sept. 2, women of Unit 61 gathered for their monthly Bunco game. As always, the competition was fierce … at least until it was time for treats. There were plenty of laughs, lots of rolling dice, and a few happy winners. It was a fun afternoon catching up with each other on summer travel and activities between shouts of “Bunco!”
