Unit Happenings – December 2024

Unit 8 October Lunch

Alisa Moore

The ladies of Unit 8 spiced up their October with lunch at Arriba Mexican grill—there’s so much to celebrate as the weather cools here in Arizona! Our annual holiday celebration will be held at Romans Oasis on Dec. 11. Unit 8 ladies interested in joining us, whether you are here for a short stay or the long term, please contact Jane Holdcroft at [email protected]. We love to include new folks! Unit 10 Ladies’ Lunch

Ane Aune

Fall is back and Unit 10 got together for a Ladies’ Lunch. It was so good to come together, have lunch, and get acquainted with our new, returning snowbirds and year-round neighbors on Nov. 7 at Eagle’s Nest Restaurant. What a great bunch of gals!

Unit 44’s Third Annual Chili Cook-Off

Jean Harris

For the third year in a row, competition was friendly and fierce in Unit 44 on Oct. 14 for another great Chili Cook-Off at the Oasis Pool! Taking top prize again was Jim Miller, who tied with newcomer Kitt Hawkins. Neighbors loaded up on chili, cornbread, and chips, and finished with Ron Baron’s delicious homemade cookies and the Razems’ pumpkin pies. No whipped cream fights were noted, only a good time catching up with our returning snowbirds.

Spooky Night in Unit 44

Jean Harris

It was a dark and boo-tiful night for Debbie and Ron Baron’s Halloween party on Oct. 24. The couple’s decorations and hospitality were inviting as Unit 44 neighbors, dressed in costumes, enjoyed a large spread of sandwiches, snacks, and Ron’s homemade desserts. The Barons’ son PJ added his hospitality and bartending skills to make the night a family-oriented evening of fun and friendship.

Unit 44 Welcomes Snowbirds Back to Men’s Breakfast

Dan Harris

The men of Unit 44 flocked to Eagle’s Nest on Nov. 6 for their monthly breakfast, and let’s just say, the flock was back in full force—our snowbirds have officially returned! With the headcount soaring, we had so many folks that we needed two tables. Catching up after a summer apart was easy, with many of us picking up right where we left off. Mark Eichkorn relished his burnt eggs and crispy bacon, and Jack Campbell kept an eagle eye on the grape jelly packets, warning anyone who dared to snag any without him noticing. And Dan Harris jogged from Unit 44 to Eagle’s Nest and back as usual. Twelve men attended. Up front (L-R): Rick Labasky, Doug Kirkpatrick, Jim Miller, and Bob Olson. In the back (L-R): Frank Gorski, Dan Harris (photographer), Ken Russo, Spike Razem, Larry Weber, Jack Campbell, Mark Eichkorn, and Bob Adkins.

The 15 Unit 46 ladies who enjoyed their monthly luncheon at P.F. Chang’s and were proud to display their Halloween candy hands (clockwise around the table): Kathy Haas, Susan Gildea, Tracy Kieras, Joy Ameel, Diane Brzozowski, JungSuk Mallen, Julie Eisenberg, Jen Collopy, Vicky Ferraresi, Hanne Stovall, Sally Coon, Jeanne Laird, Jackie Brewin, Susan Kopecky, and Dawn Razem

Unit 46 Ladies’ Luncheon

On Oct. 16, 15 ladies from Unit 46 enjoyed a Halloween-themed luncheon at P. F. Chang’s. Each person received a special Halloween table favor consisting of a candy hand filled with various goodies.

P.F. Chang’s proved to be an excellent venue, especially featuring their new lunch specials which of course, included their delicious signature lettuce wraps. Their service was very good and they were nice to accommodate payments with separate checks.

The Unit 46 ladies enjoy getting together for their luncheons every third Wednesday each month. Thanks to Dawn Razem (filling in for Linda Pop) who organized this event and also assembled the special candy hands.

Unit 46 keeps getting bigger with new residents moving in every month. And, with this growth more new neighbors are sharing in with more fun activities.

Unit 48 Celebrates Oktoberfest

Rochelle Zuckerbrow

On Oct. 13 Unit 48 celebrated fall with an Oktoberfest themed unit event.

We enjoyed German beer and pretzel bites with beer cheese to start our evening. We then moved on to a traditional German dinner of beer brats with sauerkraut, chicken schnitzel, spaetzle, German potato salad, and apple strudel for dessert.

Keith with the PebbleCreek Ballroom Club taught our guests the polka and the festive chicken dance. A big thank you to Nancy Turner for putting this fun event together.

Unit 51 Welcomes Fall

Janet Miazga

Unit 51 welcomed fall and our snowbirds with a patio party on Nov. 2. Fifty-two residents gathered at the lovely home of Lynn and Alex Lucas to catch up on their summer travels, while sharing delicious appetizers and desserts. It was the perfect opportunity for our newest unit neighbors, Sue and Pat Aaby, to meet many of us. We find that these patio parties are a pleasant and welcome way to get together without going far from home, so we will continue to plan them for the future. Our evening outside was very pleasant and comfortable—until the raindrops came, but then we just took shelter and continued to mingle.

Unit 54 Men’s Breakfast

A small group of Unit 54 men got together for breakfast and lively conversation on Nov. 6. Pictured left to right are: Mike Strong, Steve Domholt, Brad Gray, Rob Klein, Jack Klepinger, Peter Chimicles, and Steve Lookabaugh.

Unit 58 Men’s Breakfast Group at Times Square

Ed Raker

The Unit 58 Men’s Breakfast group had another memorable event on Oct. 17, at Times Square. And we didn’t even have to travel to New York to do it. This Times Square is in Litchfield Park, at Litchfield Road and Camelback. Known mainly for Italian cuisine, Times Square also prepares delicious breakfasts, and is one of our favorites. Service is always prompt and wait staff are very friendly, so we will be certain to return.

Best costume winners Sandra Miller and Charles Lynch

It’s Halloween Hijinks Again in Unit 58

Ed Raker

As another Oct. 31 rolled around, the residents of Unit 58 came up with some great Halloween costumes once again. As in the past four or five years, the party was at the home of Lynn Jacobson and Ed Raker. There was creativity beyond the limits of one’s imagination, and there were both tricks and treats involved. In the tricks department, one of us offered imaginary “tricks” by portraying a lovely example of the world’s oldest profession. Another couple came as a beekeeper and his hive full of honey. We had a robot who communicated digitally through his face mask. Another couple mimicked Gladys Ormphby and Tyrone Horneigh, who used to romance at a park bench back in the ’60s on Laugh-In. Finally, to everyone’s relief, we were able to locate two duplicates of Waldo. This is after decades of us wondering “where’s Waldo.”

There was no shortage of treats either, among which were delicious confections and desserts, salads, and actual entrees, ranging from wings to lasagna.

By popular vote of all who attended, the two best costumes were selected. In the female category, the winner was glamorous witch played by Sandra Miller. And the elaborate costume of Charles Lynch collected a prize for “White beard the Pirate.”

Unit 60 Ladies’ Luncheon

Sherri Hille

The Unit 60 Ladies’ Luncheon was held on Oct. 26. Our speaker was Jesse Ramirez, founder of Valley View Community Food Bank.

Unit 60 Welcome Back Potluck

Sherri Hille

Unit 60 enjoyed a Welcome Back Potluck on Nov. 10 at the Oasis Pool.

Unit 60 Halloween Event

Sherri Hille

Unit 60’s Halloween driveway event was on Oct. 31. There were great costumes, but three were awarded prizes: Doug Adair, 1st prize; Cheryl Piersol, 2nd prize; and Mary Owens, 3rd prize.

A fun time was had by all!

Veterans Honored in 62A

Toni Erickson

On Nov. 8, one of our own veterans from Unit 62A was honored at the “Salute to Our Veterans” ceremony held at the Renaissance Theater. Tom MacKenzie, who served our nation as a Cavalry Officer in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, was recognized that afternoon. Tom recently had participated in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., from Oct. 9 to the 11th, accompanied by Gary Watts as his guardian. In addition, several friends from Unit 62A attended to commemorate this special occasion with Tom.

A few of the neighbors extended the afternoon and met for a celebration beverage following the ceremony. They were, from left and around the table: George Evans (Air Force veteran), Betty Evans, Vic Coates (Air Force veteran ), Marilyn Coates, Gerry Hibbard, Tom MacKenzie (“Salute to Our Veterans” honoree), Jackie MacKenzie, Laurie Wyman, Bob Erickson, Gary Watts (Marine veteran), Tom and Jackie Bachmann, and photographer, Toni Erickson.

Unit 62A October Happy Hour

Toni Erickson

Unit 62A enjoyed a unique October happy hour hosted by Tom and Jackie MacKenzie at their beautiful home and backyard on the evening of Oct. 18. The fall pizza party welcomed back many returning snowbirds. The unit’s annual donations covered the cost of the pizzas, while attendees brought their own beverages. It was a wonderful evening (weather and all) that extended past the 7 p.m. normal ending time!

Several pictures were taken that evening, but we can only post one, so those lucky enough to be in this picture are, from left to right: Tom MacKenzie (host), Jerry Wrout, Bob Erickson, Steve Gonzales, George Evans, Bruce Brown, Kathleen Brown, Howard Pakin, Marilyn Newcomer, Pat Gonzales, and Pat Pakin.

Home & Garden Tour with the 62A Ladies

Toni Erickson

Twelve ladies from Unit 62A supported the “Shop with a Cop” event on Nov. 2. All donations and proceeds were designated to the City of Goodyear’s program. They enjoyed lunch together at Eagle’s Nest before pairing up in golf carts to tour the beautiful homes and gardens featured in the affair. It was a gorgeous day to explore the neighborhood and enjoy each other’s company.

Those who participated were, from left to right, Marilyn Coates, Janelle Watts, Lynn Banks, Paula Hupka, Janet Henson, Toni Erickson, Laurie Wyman, Lisa Reichert, Julie Greenbank, Judy Meservey, Nancy Nelson, and Jackie MacKenzie.

Unit 62A – Amazon Distribution Tour

Toni Erickson

While not an official unit event, the 62A Activities Committee, along with a few additional members, recently toured the Amazon distribution center in Goodyear. They were amazed by the automation within the 1.2 million-square-foot facility, which employs over 4,000 people. The informative tour lasted about an hour. Advance planning is essential, as the center only accommodates groups of 12 a couple of times each month.

Those who attended, from left to right, were: Vic Coates, Joanne Wrout, Marilyn Coates, Dale Scanlon, Janelle Watts, Julie Greenbank, Lori Wineman, Gary Watts, Barb Downey, and Elmer Greenbank.

Unit 62B Enjoying Our New Restaurant at GSQ

Judy Freidman

More than 50 residents of Unit 62B attended the “Western Hoedown” at The Stillery last month. It was a wonderful gathering of good neighbors, delightful weather and live country music. Social committee members Nancy Moore, Marie Shubin, and Judy Freidman met for dinner during opening week. After meeting with the manager and making the reservation we found out we were the first big party to reserve the patio! Unit 62B will be back soon for dinner and dancing to wonderful live country bands. It is so nice to see friends from PebbleCreek supporting our new venues in downtown Goodyear.
