Unit Happenings

Unit 8

Alisa S. Moore

The ladies of Unit 8 came together for an early holiday potluck on Dec. 12 at Jane Holdcroft’s beautiful home. The get-together provided an opportunity for a wonderful wrap-up of another year of friendship, fun, exploration of local restaurants, and great food. Anyone in Unit 8 who would like to join us, please contact Jane at [email protected].

Unit 20

Carolyn Rota

On Dec. 12, 2019, 18 ladies of Unit 20 held their annual Christmas Luncheon at the Goodyear Olive Garden. Every year, our unit brings unwrapped toys and gift cards that are given to the New Life Center. This facility is a refuge for families in a troubled situation. The generosity this year was overwhelming. We presented to the director of New Life over $250 in gift cards and numerous lovely gifts, not only for young children but also for pre-teens, teens, and moms. A big thank you to all that donated, whether you were able to attend the luncheon or not. Because of you all there was a Merry Christmas for many.

Unit 34 Welcome Back Party

Bob Young

This year’s Unit 34 Welcome Back Party was held on Nov. 9. It was a big success. We hosted over 60 neighbors and we discussed what’s been going on in PebbleCreek and introduced all new neighbors. We have had more changes in residents than we can ever remember except when the unit was being developed. We also introduced all the wonderful residents who serve our unit and updated our address list and unit map. Everyone brought their own favorite beverages and appetizers for eight to ten people.

We also handed out animated toys to display on mail boxes during the Christmas season. Oh, we also ate, drank, and had fun as we welcomed everyone back to PebbleCreek!

Unit 37 – Samba Card Group is 15 Years Old

Sue White

Several ladies from Unit 37 along with a wannabee Unit 37 player have been playing cards together since Jan. 13, 2005. This year marks their 15th anniversary! The group meets two Thursdays every month and play a card game called Samba. They have been playing Samba for over five years. Previous to that, they played Ponytail Canasta for several years, and prior to that played Hand and Foot. All of the original members still play except for Lucy Parker who started the group. When Lucy moved from PebbleCreek, Suzan Simons replaced her. Last year, the group kept track of how many points they scored in the year, how many times each gal played and how much money they won or lost. Suzan Simons scored the most points for the year, and was given a first-place medal. Linda Grabau lost the most money, so was given $1 to start the new year out right. They have grown very close through all these years, and know they will all be friends for a lifetime.

Unit 38 Celebrates with Drinks in the Driveway

Pat Kaer

Unit 38 celebrated the fall season with “Drinks in the Driveway” on Nov. 14. Members of the community gathered in the driveway of George and Maggie Phillipon for a casual get-together.

Each person brought their own drink and a few brought appetizers. Some new neighbors were welcomed into the neighborhood. Unit Rep Caryn Brett was assisted by social committee members Pat Kaer, Maggie Philippon, Barbara Brace, and Carol Horan in planning the event. The Social Committee is planning the next event—a taco bar at the Oasis Pool on Feb. 16. Neighbors, mark your calendars.

Unit 42B Celebrates the Holidays

Jan DeHaven

Holiday generosity and good cheer was plentiful as Unit 42B celebrated at their annual martini party and Kare Bear fundraiser. Bob and Claudia Marlin were the consummate hosts in their festively decorated home and poolside oasis. Terry Rossi was the chief martini maker, with his secret holiday recipe for added cheer. Kare Bear Unit 42B coordinator, Jan DeHaven, sends a special thank you to the neighbors for their generous gifts at the holiday fundraiser and martini party. Those gifts yielded over $1,600 for the benefit of our PC Kare Bears for Neighbors helping Neighbors.

Unit 43A Book Club

Kathie McNeil

The January meeting of the Unit 43A Book Club, As the Page Turns, was graciously hosted by Linda Watters on Friday, Jan. 3. Our host surprised all the members with book bags. Her son, Ronald George Watters, owner of One Custom City Printing Company in Detroit, designed the bags with a really clever new logo for the book club. The book club meets monthly from October-May and the January book selection was The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn. New members are welcome.

Unit 51 Ladies Luncheon

Janet Miazga

The new year has begun and that means another year of unit activities and events are underway, including our monthly Ladies’ Luncheons. On Jan. 9, 15 of the Unit 51 ladies met at Verrado Grille where we enjoyed a nice gathering, catching up with friends after the busy holiday season. Many of the gals met our two newest residents – Pam Cagle and Karen McFall – for the first time. Lunch was delicious and the service was excellent, and we all were grateful to our hostess, Pat Jensen, who gave each of us a lovely wrapped individual bottle of champagne to start the new year off right! Here’s to 2020 and many more fun outings!

Unit 52 Holiday Party was a Smash

Liz Gibson

Unit 52’s annual holiday party was once more a smashing success.

Holi-dazzle was held in the Chianti Room at Tuscany Falls on Monday, Dec. 16, planned and executed perfectly by Social Chair Rhae Jean Magnuson and her terrific committee.

The evening began with cocktails and snacks, followed by dinner in the beautifully decorated room. A special treat was provided by committee member Donna Strand, Realty One Group, with a bottle of wine provided at each table, choice of red or white.

The terrific band, Forever Young, provided perfect music throughout the evening for listening and dancing. The evening was a wonderful start to the holiday season!

Unit 53 ROMEO Luncheon

Sandy Stephens

The Unit 53 men had their final ROMEO luncheon Dec. 6 at the home of Richard Lundgren. Good conversation and laughs were had by all. Those in attendance were Dan Roberts, Jeff Braun, Larry Eidt, Richard Lundgren, Roger Neveraski, Ron Mormile, David Kennedy, Todd Spiegel, Dale Tietz, and Marty Braden.

Unit 53 Ladies Luncheon

Sandy Stephens

Mary-Jane Mormile hosted the Ladies Luncheon in her home Dec. 9 from 2-5p.m. and did a bang-up job spoiling the gals with an island loaded with food she had prepared for them. There were 35 gals who got to enjoy another afternoon together eating, drinking, and talking; all of which we enjoy and are so good at doing. Many of us are thinking we need bigger homes for entertaining for our returning snowbirds and happy hours when the men are included.

Unit 53 Cookie Party

Sandy Stephens

Sandy Stephens hosted her fourth annual Cookie Party Friday, Dec. 21 for 27 gals. Michael Stephens greeted the ladies at the door in his adorable elf costume, but he wasn’t the one handing out gifts…it was the gals who came that brought lovely hostess gifts from flowers and champagne to candies and more. The Kirkland eggnog was a hit even more so than the spiced apple cider this year. More of my homemade cookies, truffles, candied nuts, and zucchini bread got eaten, which I have fun baking but more fun seeing the gals eating while enjoying their friends. Carol Sanders again spoiled us playing Christmas songs on the piano.

Unit 58 Ladies Breakfast

Tim and Rose Mansell

December’s Unit 58 ladies’ monthly get together was celebrated with breakfast at Eagle’s Nest restaurant. Tasteful food, good conversations, and great company makes for yet another good time that was had by all. In wishing all a happy holiday season, hand decorated sachets were given to those that attended by host Rose Mansell.

Unit 62A Events

Gary Bomar

December was another busy month for Unit 62A. We began the month with a tailgate party at the Arizona Cardinals football game; unfortunately, the Cardinals fell flat against the Los Angeles Rams, but we had a great time socializing. We took a ride through the World of Illumination and also had a golf cart tour around PebbleCreek looking at the holiday decorations that our many residents put on display. Our Unit happy hour, men’s breakfast, and ladies lunch rounded out our Unit activities. Along with our community outreach to St Mary’s Foodbank, we collected gift cards to give to the Airman and Family Readiness Center. The gift cards were distributed to needy Airmen at Luke AFB to provide their families with needed items over the holidays. We collected over $1,500 in gift cards.

Unit 62B’s Holiday Highlights

Lin Ochs

On Dec. 19, 2019, Unit 62B enjoyed a beautiful holiday evening amongst friends. Tom and Renee Ward welcomed 104 neighbors to their beautiful home. The evening began with a delicious Tuscan dinner catered by Portillos. After dinner, 37 golf carts and nine cars divided into two caravans to tour Tuscany Falls holiday lights. Residents returned to the Ward home for dessert, hot apple cider, and a raffle. Six lucky neighbors — Jill Derkits, Dave Johnson, Connor Kraft, Indy Rephun, Sandy Sobocinski, and Linda Wainman — won customized “2019 62B” golf cart ornaments. This is the second year of the event, organized by the Holiday Lights Committee of Nancy Moore, Renee Ward, Patti Rice, Sandy Angus, and Geri Zuvich. We’re already looking forward to the 2020 event!

Unit 64 – 5th Annual Mailbox Project

Cher Zeman

Despite the short time frame between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Unit 64 still managed to pull together their fifth annual Mailbox Project. Rick Watson of the ALC headed up the judging this year with support from the staff. First place went to Gene and JoAnne Fioretti with their Frozen theme. Second place was awarded to Tom and Jeanie Weidner for their snowman. Third place went to Mike and Cher Zeman for their giant ornament. Honorable mention was Len and Lisa Flynn’s Nutcracker display. Yet there’s even more. The unit did their own voting for their personal favorites. Winner of the People’s Choice prize went to Barb and Gary Mackman for their Spruce Springsteen. The unit hopes all PebbleCreekers join us in decorating our mailboxes.
