Unit Happenings

Unit 3 Neighbors Rooting for Favorite Teams

Linda Babcock

On Oct. 30, 19 neighbors from Unit 3 got together at the home of Randy and Shonnie Harrison to root for their favorite team, either the Raiders or the Lions. In addition, the World Series with the Diamondbacks and the Texas Rangers was viewed on the big screen outside. There was lots of hooting and cheering. The food was plentiful and of such a great variety. These social get-togethers planned on a regular basis are great for getting to know your neighbors and bring everyone closer in our beautiful community. Our next big gathering will be our annual Christmas party scheduled for Sunday evening, Dec. 3.

Unit 5 Block Party

Kelly Zale

It was fiesta time for the residents of Unit 5! More than 25 residents and 53 guests came together to meet and mingle with their neighbors old and new on Nov. 5. The committee has been working on this event for a few months and was excited to welcome everyone back, as well as introduce all the new neighbors to PebbleCreek. It turned out that the weather was perfect for the potluck, a game of cornhole, and relaxing in the Arizona sun.

Unit 12 Welcome Back Gathering

Cathy Howell

The ladies of Unit 12 are back! Late Wednesday afternoons seem to be the perfect time, and Ginny’s driveway the perfect place for gathering. We enjoyed talking about who had the hottest summer and who had the most fun. (Photo by Debbie Schneider)

Unit 20 Ladies’ Lunch

Peggy Pase

The ladies of Unit 20 continue their monthly luncheons. We met at Cheddars on Oct. 19 and enjoyed delicious homestyle entrees, catching up with neighbors, and planning for the next one. Thanks to Mary Kay Kittleson for the restaurant choice and making the arrangements. Photo by Peggy Pase.

Unit 34’s 2023 Christmas Toy Show

Bob Young

Once again, Unit 34 will have a Christmas toy show for all to enjoy. If you plan to look at the lights and decorations this holiday season with or without grandchildren, please be sure to stop over Monday, Dec. 4 through Friday, Dec. 29 and enjoy our Unit 34 Christmas Toy Show. The shows are nonstop every day. If you are part of a group that visits homes to sing or whatever, stop over and let us entertain you.

Here is how it works. Every mailbox in Unit 34 has at least one Christmas animated toy display. Animated toys include Santa, Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Rudolph, Peanuts, the Grinch, and many others, plus a few new characters are added every year. Some of the animated toys light up, and all sing and dance. The display itself will be lit up as much as possible so you can enjoy it during the day and after dark. This is a “do it yourself” display, so you can visit at your convenience. Instructions are displayed on each toy. Press the “TRY ME” sticker.

Directions: On the Tuscany side take Clubhouse Drive to Sarival. Turn right on Sarival to Monterey. Take a right on Monterey to 162nd Lane. You have arrived. Any questions, please contact Bob Young at [email protected] or 314-614-3058.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa. Enjoy our show!

Unit 36 Is Knotty and Nice

Jan Frustaglia

Some units play cards; Unit 36 does knot-tying for fun! Ten residents from Unit 36 met in three 2-hour workshops to create holiday rope canes. The kits were purchased from a nautical shop in Huron, Ohio. Pictured (left to right) are: JoAnn Smyth, Deborah Stoner, Cindy Koch, Sue Smith, and Jan Frustaglia.

Unit 40 Ladies’ Lunch

DeeDee Fast

Eleven ladies of Unit 40 met at Old Chicago on Oct. 20 for our first get-together of the fall. We had a good time catching up on each other’s summer adventures and how everyone is doing. We are looking forward to our upcoming Welcome Back party and other activities planned for the fall/winter season.

Back by Popular Demand: Unit 44’s Chili Cook-Off

Jean Harris

Unit 44’s 2nd Annual Fall Chili Cook-Off event, hosted by the lovely Deb Fahey and her husband Paul, was held on Nov. 8 at the Oasis Pool. Five contestants competed neck-and-neck for the title of Unit 44’s Best Chili. While neighbors sampled the offerings, Dan Harris explained the voting rules, which included: Voting officials cannot be bribed, and remember which chili you think tastes best—if you forget, go back and eat some more. As Official Ballots were counted, nervous tension was relieved by everyone enjoying delicious warm chili with all the fixings, cornbread, salads, and pumpkin pie. The race was close, with Jim Miller taking home the top prize with his signature dish, Jimmy’s Rootin’ Tootin’ Farter Starter Butt Burnin’ Chili. Prizes were also awarded for second place, a tie between Kathy Clark and Paul Fahey. In addition to being host and contestant, Paul Fahey also performed the role of Spoon Police, in an effort to conserve plastic cutlery by voters sampling all five chilis. Susan Labasky, holding both her spoon and that of her husband Rick’s, was not cited and the event continued without arrests.

Unit 44 Kicks Off Fall with Oktoberfest

Jean Harris

On a hot yet beautiful October night, Unit 44 residents Mike and Mary-Lou Stepien hosted an Oktoberfest bash for their appreciative neighbors. Mike and Mary-Lou’s son Darryl flew in from Alaska specifically to fill the role of head chef, grilling bratwursts to perfection for the hungry crowd. Although some were tempted, no one was pushed unwillingly into the Oasis Pool, where the event took place. The smiling faces in the group picture show it was a good time with good neighbors, one of the reasons so many choose PebbleCreek!

Unit 48 Gathering

Rochelle Zuckerbrow

Unit 48 had a gathering at Sunrise Park on Oct. 21. We were lucky to enjoy a rockin ‘concert put on by unit 48 resident Brian Wentz of the Happy Hour Band. Pictured are the band members, left to right: Brian Wentz, guitar and lead vocals; Richard Knowles, guitar and vocals; Becky Trimble, lead vocals and guitar; behind Becky is Bill Wise, drummer; Jim Ledford, bass guitar and vocals. and Joe Volstromer, keyboard and vocals. Thanks to Nancy and Stan Turner, Renee King, and Judy Altimeter for planning and organizing an awesome event!

Unit 49A Welcome Back Gathering

Robin Macik

Residents of Unit 49A got together on Oct. 21 to welcome back our friends who were gone for the summer months. Everyone brought an appetizer to share, and, as always, there were many varieties. Residents also showed off the new Unit 49A Event sign.

Next up was the Holiday Dinner in the Chianti Room on Nov. 29 before many of our friends travel for the holidays. See you in January!

Unit 49B Celebrates Oktoberfest

Margie Guck

Unit 49B got together at the Oasis Pool for an Oktoberfest celebration.

Unit 51 Ladies’ Luncheon

Janet Miazga

What a pleasant day for our Unit 51 November Ladies’ Luncheon! Hosted by Bevy Hogan and Jennifer Yelvington, 16 of us gathered at The Vig Park West restaurant—it was the first time there for many of the gals, including two of the ladies’ visiting daughters. We enjoyed the patio seating and lovely ambience, along with the autumn table decorations our hosts provided. It was a great location with shopping nearby to prolong the outing for some. Our monthly luncheons are always a great way for our neighbor friends to get together.

Unit 51 Welcome Back Party

Janet Miazga

Unit 51 held a “welcome back” patio party on Oct. 28 at the Miazga’s. Approximately 45 neighbors gathered to enjoy an array of delicious appetizers, perfect evening weather, and the World Series game in the background. Along with seeing friends we hadn’t seen in a while, many “newbies” to the unit got to meet some “oldies,” and new friendships were formed. The only problem was that I completely forgot to take pictures at the start of the gathering when everyone was there, so this is the female group that stayed ’til the end! We’re looking forward to our Unit 51 holiday party and more gatherings in the new year!

Unit 58 Halloween Party

Ed Raker

Oct. 31 was our annual Unit 58 Halloween Party, again at the home of Ed Raker and Lynn Jacobson. The format was the same as our regular “happy hours,” in which you bring your choice of beverage (adult or otherwise) as well as a salad, hors d’oeuvre, appetizer, dessert, salad, etc. to share with the group. Residents were encouraged to come in costume and show off their unique imaginative talent, and they did not disappoint!

Unit 60 Luncheon—Tuscany Capri Room

The Unit 60 Ladies’ Luncheon was held on Oct. 21 at the Tuscany Falls Capri room. Forty-six women attended and each attendee provided a bit of information about themselves, enjoyed a delicious lunch, and many made new acquaintances. Barb Stampke, unit board chair, provided updates regarding plastic bag collection, food donations, and upcoming Unit 60 events.

Unit 60 Ladies’ Luncheon

The Unit 60 ladies’ luncheon was held on Oct. 14 and had 20 attendees. Marianne Boechler, president of The Women’s Giving Circle, shared information about the group. Sherri Hille, Unit 60 Kare Bears Coordinator, also shared a Kare Bears summary of services offered.

Unit 60 Men’s Golf Event

Sherri Hille

The men’s PopStroke event was held on Oct. 9, and 11 men from Unit 60 attended. They enjoyed golf, dinner, and drinks.

62A Halloween Happy Hour

Toni Erickson

Laurie Wyman opened her garage and hosted the annual Halloween happy hour for October, and of course it was on Halloween night. Costumes were not mandatory but encouraged. Bruce and Lynn Banks, Vic and Marilyn Coates, Rick and Wendy Langhals, Gerry Hibbard and Paula Hupka, Betty Evans, and Judy Meservey rose to the occasion of dressing up. Rich and Dee Andes and Howard and Pat Pakin were first time attendees to this event as they recently moved into Unit 62A. Another great activity was experienced on Oct. 17, when the unit toured the Martin Auto Museum. This car museum, located at 43rd Ave. and Thunderbird in Glendale, features more than 160 vehicles, including classic cars, hot rods, custom cars, and imports. It also has one of the largest collections of auto memorabilia, antique gas pumps, and signage anywhere. The unit followed this tour by eating at Firebirds.

Del Webb Museum Toured by Unit 62A Ladies

Toni Erickson

On Oct. 19, the Unit 62A ladies toured one of the original homes built by Del Webb. The museum is located in the very first model home which was built by Del E. Webb Corporation in 1960. The Del Webb Sun Cities Museum is a living, breathing tribute to what Sun City once was and continues to strive to be. It’s the perfect place to spend an hour or so if you are looking for something fun and entertaining. The museum costs $5 for those 18 and over and is open during the middle of the day from Sunday through Thursday. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but don’t let its humble exterior fool you. Once you’re inside the former model home, the walls are full of information and your docent tour guide will show you around and share a wonderful glimpse of the area’s interesting past. Highly recommend this tour! Following the tour, the ladies enjoyed a nice lunch at the new Cooper’s Hawk located at 16470 West Alexandria Way in Surprise.

Unit 62B Fashion Show

Judy Freidman

The ladies of Unit 62 B were treated to an extraordinary afternoon in the Chianti Room. As the double doors opened to the beautifully decorated room, we were given refreshing mimosas before heading to our tables to mingle with our neighbors.

Emcee Patrice Chatterton introduced Barbara Hall, Chico’s stylist, who informed us that the models would show three outfits each specifically picked for them at their store. She described the outfits before the models walked around to the various tables for a closer look and a “feel of the material” if we wanted.

After the fashion show, the ladies enjoyed a delicious breakfast brunch. A few trivia questions about Chico’s history rendered the winners wonderful gifts from the store.

Many thanks to the unit committee members for their hard work in planning this event. These members are: Sandy Angus, Patrice Chatterton, Mary Cornwell, Judy Freidman, Nancy Moore, Marie Shubin, and Sandy Sobocinski.
