PebbleCreek Ukulele Club has been meeting all summer long, albeit with a reduced number of participants at each weekly jam. We are looking forward to welcoming returning members as well as new ones. We focus on playing favorite songs and having fun, but we also like to educate others about this fascinating instrument whose name means “the jumping flea.”
Did you know there are four sizes of ukulele? The smallest one that you might often see played in Hawaii is called a Soprano. The next size up is the Concert. The next one is the Tenor, and the largest is the Baritone. The first three instruments are tuned to the notes G, C, E, and A on their four strings. The Baritone however, has different tuning with the strings being set at D, B, G, and E, just like four of the strings of a guitar. This difference means that the chords for a baritone ukulele are different from the soprano, concert, and tenor.
Players choose the size that fits them the best and they feel most comfortable with. There are many good brands of ukuleles, and prices range from around $50 to, well, if you want a custom made one, the sky’s the limit!
In our club we have players who play all the different sizes. It doesn’t matter as we all blend together well and produce a great sound. We are a happy, fun, welcoming group. Join us or just come along to listen.
We meet every Thursday from 1 until 2:30 p.m. in the Palm Room in the Eagle’s Nest Clubhouse. For more information, contact Gillian Driscoll at 303-548-2108 or Ross Hart at [email protected].
