Last year the PebbleCreek Ukulele Club hosted their first Open House, and it was a huge success! Many came, some to just listen and sing, and some to see if they might like to learn to play the ukulele. On Jan. 18, the club will host their 2nd Annual Open House, and everyone is invited.
We will sing and play for your entertainment and hope you will join in. We will also give information about playing the uke (as we call it) and also about purchasing one. Ukes come in a variety of sizes and prices. You do not need to spend a lot of money on your first uke. Although beware! Ukuleles can become a passion, and many of us have multiple instruments!
We will also have some ukuleles to try if you wish. We can help you get started. By the end of the first lesson, you will be playing three chords, which will enable you to play many songs. A great number of pop songs, old and new, only require three chords.
The ukulele is a great instrument to play a variety of musical genres on. We play songs from the ’20s to current day. We play folk songs, Hawaiian songs, pop songs, holiday songs, and much more. We find all our music online so there is no need to carry around huge amounts of printed sheet music. You do not need to be able to read traditional music to play the uke. We learn chords and identify them on the music by their letter—e.g., C, G, etc.
Other great things about the uke are … It is portable. You can take it with you in the car, on airplanes, even put it on your back and ride your bike to uke jam! Playing the uke introduces you to a whole community of wonderful, friendly folks, not just in PC, but all around the Valley, the country, and even the world. There are several other clubs in the Valley who welcome players to their jams. And, boy do we have fun!
We welcome other string instrument players as well as ukers. Do you play mandolin, autoharp, or banjo? You are welcome to jam along with us.
So come and join us at the 2nd Annual Open House on Thursday, Jan. 18 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Palm Room at the Eagle’s Nest Clubhouse. We look forward to meeting you.
