The first Saturday in March saw the PebbleCreek Ukulele Club perform at the two-day Glendale Folk Festival held at historic Sahuaro Ranch Park in Glendale. This was our fourth time performing at the festival. The day was bright and sunny, although very windy. Playing with a strong wind blowing is always difficult, but our group rose to the challenge. At the festival each performer or group has 25 minutes to perform and this usually means five or six songs can fit. The group played a variety of songs including “This Land is Your Land,” “The Hukilau Song,” and “Beautiful Kauai.” The performance was well received and a good time was had by all.
Prior to the performance, the group provided a workshop on the hula and Hawaiian strum. Group Member Irene Manilli taught participants some hula moves, and the group demonstrated the Hawaiian or Island strum. The workshop was met with enthusiasm and enjoyment.
The Glendale Folk Festival is a two-day, annual event that brings musicians and singers from across the state together to celebrate many kinds of music. The event is free and a great way to spend a weekend outdoors listening to great music.
The PebbleCreek Ukulele Club meets every Thursday in the Palm Room at the Eagle’s Nest Clubhouse from 1 to 2:30 p.m. We welcome both seasoned players and newcomers to this fun instrument. Stop by and meet us. You are welcome to watch, sing, or play. We will continue to meet throughout the summer for those braving the Arizona heat!
