The Tennis Club—An Intimate Group of Amazing People

Donna Gillen

This is a reflection of gratitude in writing Post articles. Throughout these months, I have grown to love this club more and more.

What makes this club so special? It’s the members of course. I have gotten to know so many absolutely amazing people through this tenure. I went from returning to tennis after so many years, to actually playing and celebrating with truly beautiful people.

Being secretary of the club has propelled me into involvement in all aspects of club events. I have seen changes in the board throughout this time, and each person I have worked with helped me grow into a better and more compassionate person.

But, it is important to know that interaction with devoted players has truly brought out in me a sense of being. I have become a better person through this intimate club setting.

Now it is important to know, it is not how big a club becomes, but how invested its members are. These members truly care about the growth of each of us, as well as our well-being. We share our ups, and we also share our downs; we feel free to be ourselves with each other. When we hear of a member who needs us in some form through tough times, we give of ourselves with joy and support. Our club members have hearts of gold.

On the courts, everyone is all smiles—those warm embracing smiles, hugs, and some good humor—making us grow closer and dearer to each other. Even during competitive events, we cheer each other on, including our opponents.

It is so hard to highlight anyone in particular, but I would like to shed light on some amazing couples that play together:

I would first like to mention Charlie and Susan Hunt. I worked with Susan on the board. Through that relationship, I have gone back to dancing, lunches with girlfriends, and have gotten to know her very artistic and hilarious husband. They are true blessings in my life.

Vikki and Keith Constable are a power couple with fresh ideas, always encouraging tennis players no matter what level they are. Vikki is currently our tournament director, and her original creative ideas are moving our club into the next level of play. Keith has been instrumental in helping the club give back to the community.

Norma and Dennis Whitley are a power couple that is 100% involved in the club. Dennis was vice president followed by president. Norma started as treasurer of the club, then monitored the court reservations system, then returned to the board as website and communications director. They are a couple that supports each other’s endeavors as they strive in promoting the club.

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Jean Bee and getting to know her and David better. They are always there with a warm and welcoming smile. They are genuine through and through.

Joan and Curtis Patchin give back to PebbleCreek in so many ways. Joan was our social director during COVID-19. She was so very creative with social activities and was meticulous. She also is an amazing cook. If you don’t know Curtis, first and foremost, he is just fun to be around. He also is an amazing artist. Check out his work in the Creative Arts Center!

These are just a few of the outstanding couples in the Tennis Club. I guess the phrase “the couple that plays together stays together” is truly present here.
