Shalom Club Relaxes After Busy Holiday Season

Whenever the Torah is read at a Jewish service, it is marched around the congregation so people have a chance to touch and honor it. At the Shalom Club’s Rosh Hashanah services in September, Eddie Cohen had the honor of leading the Torah procession. Rabbi David Rosenberg is behind him, greeting members of the Shalom Club.

As the Shalom Club welcomed Rabbi David Rosenberg and inaugurated new prayerbooks for the High Holidays, this, the most sacred season of the Jewish year, was a tremendous success for club members and guests.

A huge thanks to Jill Burnham, who orchestrated the holidays this year. It’s a huge undertaking, involving finding a rabbi who is not only available but also a good fit for our demographics. Ordering new books, working with catering, answering numerous questions—Jill managed the numerous details with flying colors.

A big thanks as well to Kay Lipton who managed the Break the Fast at the conclusion of Yom Kippur and Sherry and Mitch Mankosa for once again opening their home and sukkah for the celebration of Sukkot.

October will be a return to normal. On Oct. 7, the ladies will lunch at Eagle’s Nest while the men visit the new Firebirds in Goodyear Civic Square. On Oct. 21 from 4 to 6 p.m., members will “Mix and Mingle” at the Westwind Tavern. It’s a chance to catch up on the news from returning snowbirds, savor your favorite beverage, and enjoy the camaraderie of friends, old and new.

As usual, our monthly meeting will be the third Sunday of the month (Oct. 18). It’s a chance to learn more about the operation of one of Phoenix’s Jewish cemeteries before we need it.

The board is evaluating several trips for the coming months, including the West Valley Symphony, the Addams Family at Theater Works in Peoria, and the Arizona Broadway Theater. Stay tuned for news about the fall and winter season.
