Thirteen rigs from the Rovin’ Pebbles RV Club recently spent an enjoyable stay at Catalina State Park (North of Tucson) from November 12-16. During those five days, club members visited many of the interesting and informative attractions found in the Tucson area.
Monday saw our caravan arrive at Catalina State Park, at an elevation of nearly 3,000 feet, nestled along the Santa Catalina Mountains. The view was beautiful with changing shadows on the hills and valleys surrounding the campground. We began the activities with a delicious potluck dinner. It was an early evening as the wind and the cold drove the campers into their warm RVs for the night.
Tuesday started early with a 30-minute drive to the Biosphere 2. This facility, owned and managed by the University of Arizona, hosts several ongoing scientific studies. After an informative video presentation on the history and mission of the project, our guide took us through the facility’s “biomes” or habitats, including an ocean, a mangrove wetland, a rainforest and a desert. We also saw the air-handling infrastructure (called lungs). After the tour we were off to lunch at the Oracle Patio Café. Later we enjoyed happy hour food provided by our campers and happy hour drinks of our choice.
On Wednesday we toured the privately funded Pima Air and Space Museum. There we were taken on a guided tour of more than 150 restored aircraft, both military and commercial, as well as displays of equipment and personal histories of both people and planes. The visit included walking tours of aviation hangars, a space gallery and the B-17 Flying Fortress Museum. After the tour campers were on their own for lunch and the afternoon. Later, our campers’ aeronautical engineering skills were tested during Happy Hour when they had to make and fly a paper airplane. Len Magsamen won the competition with Glen Bolon a close second.
Thursday morning the campers were treated to a breakfast of biscuits and gravy, along with scrambled eggs, sausage and fruit prepared by WagonMasters, Jeff and Judy Harris and Richard Anderson. The afternoon was a YoYo (you’re on your own) day with campers doing various activities. Those activities included golfing, touring Kartchner Caverns, visiting art galleries and resting and enjoying the beautiful weather.
Each morning the day started with coffee and breakfast goodies and Friday was no different. After eating it was time to pack up and head back to PebbleCreek. Another great caravan for our Rovin’ Pebbles RV Club.
