John Wojtowicz
John Wojtowicz has written an article titled Comparison of Calcium Carbonate Saturation and Scaling Indexes that has been accepted for publication in the ANALYST, which is a peer reviewed journal devoted to water treatment and technology. The article deals with a critical analysis of proposed alternatives to the Langelier Saturation Index which was devised in 1936 by W. F. Langelier (Professor of Sanitary Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley) as a tool to assist in corrosion control in cast iron pipes in municipal water distribution systems by means of deposition of protective thin films of calcium carbonate. The analysis showed that none of the alternatives produced an improvement over the Langelier index which is based on the relative calcium carbonate saturation of water and is calculated using the water’s temperature, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and total mineral content as well as relevant chemical and thermodynamic data. The Langelier index is widely used in municipal, industrial and recreational water treatment to control corrosion and calcium carbonate precipitation and scaling.
