Most players would benefit from playing within the rhythm or flow of the game or match they are in. Millions of competitive billiard players wanting to improve their winning percentage should consider the flow of the game or match.
Let us first talk about the flow of a game. When I make balls on the break, I usually do not care what was made. I look at the table and choose an easy ball to get started on. I also consider: which set of balls will be the easiest to run, do all of the balls have a pocket they can be made in, balls blocking pockets, clusters, bank shots, combination shots, just to name a few. One time I surprised my opponent, when I made four stripes on the break, but did not have a good opening shot, so I chose solids and ran the rack. Think about just winning the game you’re playing.
Let’s say the 8 ball is on the end rail and you have an object ball in a pocket by the 8 ball, it just makes sense to shoot all your other balls first and save the ball by the 8 ball to set up the 8 ball for the win. Your goal is not to just pocket balls, it is to win the game. Also if that object ball blocks the pocket for the 8 ball try not to move it until you can win. If you have a cluster that you can’t break out. Play defense and force your opponent to break up the cluster for you.
Let’s now talk about the flow of a match. In a race to 3 you find yourself up 2 to 0. Play aggressive and try to win that third game. Your opponent must beat you 3 games in a row to win. If you’re down 2 to 0 then try to be a little more conservative and try to come back into the match. In a league match try to not focus on the score. Have every player on your team just try to win one game at a time. One time my league team was down 7 to 2 in a race to 10. We focused on just winning one game at a time and came back to win a 9 to 9 tiebreaker. The flow of the match that got you behind can also flow back the other direction. If you can let the flow of a game or match work in your favor, you will win more often.
