Eddie is a 10-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, born in Edgeley (north Philly), Penn., in May 2013. Eddie is the second of two Cavies that we’ve had, the other being Penny Lane or Laney. We love Cavies because they are smart, fun, loyal, love to please their owners, and don’t require too much exercise.
Eddie’s favorite thing to do is to play ball. We started out by rolling it back and forth, then switched to catching it on a bounce, then banking the ball off a nearby baseboard—which he can return the same way. He loves “up high” where we bounce the ball high, and he runs and jumps to catch it as fast as he can. Eddie goes crazy for the dog ball launcher—a gun type ball shooter—which we only play outside on cool days as our house walls are white and this pup-mom says no marks on the new walls, please.
Eddie took his first plane ride last June to Arizona with his pet parents, Lynn and Paul Gresko, when they moved from New Jersey for the warmer weather of the Southwest. He keeps watch for animals, barking to let us know what’s in the yard or nearby. For some unknown reason, he completely ignores the quails. He barks a lot at the bunnies, which he misses chasing in our large yard in New Jersey. But what is most interesting to me, is that he has a special bark for the coyotes. It’s a particularly excited, intense, and incessant bark, and, if we are out on leash, he pulls hard and wants to track the scent whether he has seen them or not. Luckily, he is small enough that I can carry him if needed. He also barks (a lot!) at animals on television, even the cartoon ones, which make it challenging to watch 1923 and the like. When they go off screen, he runs behind the TV to see if they’re there. And, not kidding, Vanna White, yes, Vanna White! He can watch the entire show of Wheel of Fortune quite calmly, but when Vanna is on, he goes nuts, barking and jumping at the TV. I seriously have no explanation.
Eddie moved again in February to his new house in PebbleCreek after renting for a while. He loves his new surroundings, especially the fenced yard, where he can roam a bit and have a break from the leash. He has made quite a few doggie friends in PebbleCreek, especially Nash, Kiwi, and Kerry, our newest neighbor. He thinks the dog park is okay, but the many scents are overwhelming, and he gets a bit nervous, so he stays mostly to the walking paths and backyard. Eddie also loves staying with his dog sitter, Xan and her pup, Sienna. Xan is known to entertain her guests by having Eddie watch Wheel of Fortune to see what happens.
All in all, Eddie’s having a happy retirement.
