Sally makes me laugh
Jean and Wayne Reynolds
I wasn’t looking for a dog, let alone a puppy, after my sweet Nelli passed from cancer on May 1, but—.
My friend sent me a picture of the cutest four month old Lethal White Australian Shepherd that was in foster care and needed me. She is a blue Merle that the foster named Tatum. I changed her name to Sally. My husband calls her Tater. She has teeny eyes but can see with limited vision. She can also hear. She is a lucky pup.
You see the Merles are rare and expensive. They are born with a missing gene that makes their color very unusually splotched with the red and brown (red merle) or black and gray (blue merle) coloring. Sometimes they have different colored eyes, one blue and one brown eye, or marble eyes.
The backyard breeders have decided to breed Merle to Merle and get all Merle puppies. Unfortunately, 25% will be born blind, deaf or both. Some just have abnormalities like Sally with her tiny eyes. They can’t sell those puppies for the big bucks, so they are throw away puppies.
The breeders either kill them when they find out they are deaf or blind or sell them as bait dogs. They are easy prey because they can’t see or hear. The wonderful organization called Amazing Aussie Lethal White Rescue of Arizona willingly takes these puppies and finds homes for them. That is where Sally came from.
Sally is a sweet little girl, stubborn at times, but makes me laugh at the silly things she does. She is in Puppy School and is doing well. She is a Therapy Dog in Training. She goes to the dog park and plays with the other dogs. If you see us, please stop by and get some kisses. She has a bunch to give away.
