Brain healthy food for Alzheimer’s/Dementia patients

Rayma Scalzo

If you are a caregiver for someone with Alzheimer’s/Dementia, you are invited to attend our Alzheimer’s/Dementia Caregiver Discussion Group on Saturday, July 16 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Kim Vitellaro-Rendler, BCHN, will be discussing brain healthy choices, supplements, foods that are easy to make into finger foods and tips on stimulating an appetite. She will also answer basic nutritional questions. Kim is a Nutritional Counselor and Director of Nutritional Services at LifeScape Medical Associates in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Kim started her career by receiving her associate’s degree in applied science from William Rainey Harper College in Illinois with a specialty in Medical Assisting. She worked as a medical assistant in Obstetrics and Gynecology for a private practice for 10 years. Following this experience, Kim decided to gain additional experience by joining Mayo Clinic Family Medicine for 10 years.

During her time with Mayo Clinic Kim also gained special expertise in healthy lifestyle education by working as a Weight Watchers group facilitator for 10 years and spent three years as an “I Am Hungry” healthy eating group facilitator. During these years working in nutrition Kim became excited about her new found love for helping patients regain better health. She attended Hawthorn University and became board certified as a Holistic Nutritionist. Kim is excited and motivated to educate patients on making healthier lifestyle choices.

Following the presentation our time will be spent with members asking questions or sharing experiences. Our group provides information, resources and comfort for those residents who are caregivers for loved ones who have Alzheimer’s or any type of dementia. They could live in the home, at a local care facility or out of state.

Respite Care

We may be able to provide free respite care for those having Alzheimer’s/Dementia disease during the caregiver’s meeting. This allows the caregiver the opportunity and peace of mind to attend the discussion group. If you let us know, we will try to arrange for someone to come to your home during the two hour meeting. For this assistance we do ask that you RSVP by Thursday, July 14.

Monthly Breakfast

The caregivers meet for breakfast on the first Saturday of each month at 9:00 a.m. This gives them an opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal level. Knowing others who are going through the same journey is very beneficial.
