The February business meeting of the PebbleCreek Democratic Club (PCDC) reflected the breadth of activities in which the club is involved as the membership gears up for a busy election year, lots of social and community benefit activities, and committees to support all the activities.

Social Committee Chair Frankie Veltri noted that the February events would include the Mardi Gras Dinner Dance, the Ladies’ Luncheon, the Men’s Breakfast, the Saturday breakfasts, and pub and game nights. Special events in March will include a trip to see the production of Remembering M*A*S*H at the Renaissance Theater and a trip to the spring training game of the Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds. In April, there will be a ladies’ happy hour and a barbeque. Members of the club went to see Hello Girls at the Phoenix Theatre in January.

The PCDC has created a singles group for like-minded singles from the club who want to get together for various activities and events. Their activities will include dinners, happy hours, local events, and sporting events. At their first meeting on Jan. 22, they selected Camille Moawad as the chair of the group.

Judy Hart reported that the club in January contributed 952 pounds of clothing to the Phoenix Mission and $150 in cash and 201 pounds of food to the Agua Fria Food and Clothing Bank, which is not accepting clothing at this time. In 2021, the club members contributed $4,000 in cash and 5,500 pounds of food, diapers, and paper products to Agua Fria.

The club recognized long-term, active members Phyllis and Les Minsuk, whose commitment to the club goes back at least a decade. Les started and has run the Saturday morning breakfast event for years, worked on the End Dirty Money campaign, and been involved in other club activities, while Phyllis has been active with the Social Committee. They received a lifetime membership to the club for their continued dedication.

The speaker at the March 2 club meeting will be Martin Quezada, Democratic candidate for Arizona state treasurer. First elected to the Arizona State Senate in 2014, Attorney Quezada was re-elected in 2016, 2018, and 2020. He serves as the Democratic whip and as the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee and Senate Rules Committee. He is also a member of the Senate Appropriations, Education, and Finance Committees. Prior to serving in the State Senate, he served in the State House of Representatives and still serves on the Pendergast Elementary School District Governing Board. He earned his degrees from Glendale Community College, ASU West, and the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at ASU.

The March 2 meeting will be at the Tuscany Falls Ballroom; the social hour starts at 6 p.m. and the meeting at 7 p.m. The meeting is open to all and no reservations are required. For more information, please visit pcdemclub.org.
