On July 30, just another triple digit day, seven PC hikers ventured cross town to the Hackamore Trailhead and completed a scenic nine mile meander through some very interesting terrain in the Goldfield Mountains (including seeing a mountain sheep). The Goldfields are part of Tonto National Forest and are a rugged and colorful Sonoran Desert range, once home to significant mining activity. As you drive up Apache Trail (Highway 88) toward Saguaro Lake, you may be mesmerized by the beautiful and mysterious Superstition Mountains on your right but you should also look to the left at the Goldfields. Although not very high, these rugged mountains are very scenic and offer an impressive range of hiking opportunities (and wildflowers in the spring). The hiking club enjoys local areas like this frequently as well as overnight trips to more distant areas. The club kicks off the 2015-2016 season with the Tuscany Falls Ballroom meeting, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. and meets on the third Thursday throughout the season; visit the club’s website at pchikers.org for more information and pictures.

On July 23, five members of the PebbleCreek Hiking Club did a successful exploratory hike in search of a very large natural arch in the Morristown area near the Hassayampa River. The club does hikes every weekday during the regular hiking season of September to May. The first meeting of the season will be September 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the Tuscany Falls Ballroom. For more information about the club, please visit our website at pchikers.org.

During a hike on August 10, Clare Bangs, a hiker in the PebbleCreek Hiking Club, became only the third hiker in the history of the club to hike at least 1,000 miles in a single hiking season (September through September). The club does hikes ranging from four to 12 plus miles in areas as close as Verrado and as far away as Prescott and Sedona. Please visit pchikers.org for more photos and information about the club.
