A new year brings a new Opportunity Quilt for you to enjoy and have a chance to win. We will be introducing the 2016 Quilt next month at the Desert Fest. This beautiful quilt was designed by Karen Bogadi, the top was pieced by many of our PC Quilters and finally it was quilted by our ribbon winning member Barb Maurer.
The 2015 Opportunity Quilt ticket sales made it possible for the PC Quilters to make and donate over 235 quilts, over 20 walker bags, 124 breast cancer pillows and over 30 flannel receiving blankets to the following local charities:
New Life Center offers shelter, safety and service to families seeking independent and violence-free lives. High quality programs demonstrate respect for the individual and a serene environment in which families heal and plan for the future. Each child leaves with a quilt.
Ryan’s House is a Hospice for children located in Central Phoenix. It is the only Hospice for children from birth to age 16 in the Valley. It is totally funded by donations as insurances don’t cover hospice care for children.
Austin Center for Exceptional Students. The school is for grades Kindergarten through 12. Classes are divided as follows: K to 3; 4 to 6; 7 to 8; 9 to 12. Quilts are kept in the classrooms. Quilts will help students when throwing tantrums or zoning out. They help when students have trouble sitting still, focusing or transitioning from one task to another and when exhibiting fearful or aggressive behaviors in certain situations. Currently each classroom only has one quilt.
Southwest Family Advocacy Center is a multidisciplinary facility developed and funded by the police department of three municipalities: Avondale, Buckeye and Goodyear. The purpose is to provide quality investigations of abuse in the most sensitive, appropriate manner to crime victims. Children visiting the center are from talking age to 17 years old; however, the majority of the children are from six to nine years of age. Each child leaves the facility with a quilt.
West Valley Hospital Auxiliary. These flannel quilts are given to indigent women/families that have nothing for their new babies.
Hospice of the Valley and the PebbleCreek Breast Cancer Support Group.
Thank you to everyone who bought a chance to win the 2015 Irish Stone Creek quilt. For those of us who didn’t win we now can purchase tickets to win the 2016 dazzling Opportunity Quilt. Check it out next month in the Creative Arts Center.
Just as in years past our tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The drawing for the 2016 quilt will be held at our December 2016 luncheon.
