Mother’s Day and Alzheimer’s Support

Teri Sellers

PebbleCreek Alzheimer’s Support Group is available for residents who have a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia. We meet twice a month, a breakfast social and a support group meeting. Our goal is to provide support and information to families that are caring for a loved one with dementia.

Every woman that has dementia had a mother, and perhaps was a mother. She may still remember her own mother very vividly. Being a mom is no easy task. It involves headaches, backaches, heartaches, and plenty of exhaustion. It can also be one of life’s greatest joys.

Being a caregiver is a difficult role. Approximately two-thirds of caregivers are women, and over one-third of dementia caregivers are daughters.

We know that mothers and daughters share a unique bond, and this Mother’s Day, we are celebrating mother-daughter relationships that are truly as unique as they come, as well as those mother-son relationships.

To the members of our group and those reading this article who have a mother with dementia, I highly recommend that you celebrate on May 14. She may or may not know and understand this wonderful holiday, but you do. Our mothers brought us into this world and loved us. We are the person we are today because of how she raised us. It may not have been perfect, but it was with love.

Love is one of the few things that people with dementia still understand. She may not know your name, but she does know that you are someone special to her.

Celebrate in a way that has meaning to you and her. Hugs, kisses, and sweets generally go a long way. Don’t forget to tell her how much you love her even if she can’t respond. Those words can still touch her heart and will definitely touch yours.

If you are not a member of our group, it is easy to join. You are not alone. I want to share helpful resources and information with you and add you to our email list. Our support group is an excellent way to learn more about the journey that is dementia and a wonderful way to meet others that are going through the same journey as you. Your information is always safe and confidential. The benefits are priceless. Please contact me, Teri Sellers at 602-793-0299 or [email protected].
