November 4: You’re never too old to dream big
Shannon Tyree
Is it ever too late to become a competitive athlete?
Apparently not, according to Eric Goldfarb, the creator of the documentary Impossible Dreamers, who will show an excerpt of the film and discuss how it changed his perspective on seniors at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, November 4. The documentary features several senior athletes who strive to defy gravity in competition and life.
The film took three years to complete. During that time, Goldfarb experienced many ups—-witnessing seniors win gold medals and make world records—-but there were also downs along the way, including injuries, surgeries and even death. Telling the story is Goldfarb’s passion; telling true stories, told with passion.
Goldfarb has a connection to Arizona. He was born in Scottsdale and graduated from the University of Arizona. Since then his work has consisted of television editing for more than 20 years, for shows like Taken and The Amazing Race and Naked and Afraid. His wife Jenny, the film’s producer, will join him to talk about healthy eating and living with meaning and longevity.
The film has won many accolades. “You won’t leave this film unchanged,” said a doctor from the Phoenix VA Hospital in Phoenix, while the mayor of Claremont, California said it is “an inspirational masterpiece.
Tickets to this presentation are $15 per person. You can purchase tickets online at www.LifeLongLearningatPC.org at the LLL Center, before any Monday Morning Lecture or at the door of the Renaissance Theater on the evening of the presentation.
Link. Shop. Benefit.

Yep, it’s that simple.
Link your Fry’s V.I.P. Card to LifeLong Learning at PebbleCreek and Fry’s will donate money to support our programming. In one quarter, LLL received more than $200 from 40 residents who are participating in the program. It’s a way for them to help LLL by just doing what they normally do; buy groceries, grab a sandwich or fill their gas tank. Best of all, it doesn’t cost them a thing.
It’s simple to do and the benefits start immediately.
Already have a Fry’s V.I.P. Card? Easy directions to link your account are available on LLL’s website, at www.lifelonglearningatpc.org/donate/fry’s.
Don’t have a Fry’s account? Then visit frysfood.com/account/create. Want to do it in person? Visit the customer service desk at any Fry’s store and set up an account. It’s fast and easy and your regular shopping habits will have an immediate impact. Our goal is to have 100 people signed up by the end of the year and $1000 in donations each year.
If you need help linking your account, stop by the LLL office during our office hours, Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to noon, for assistance. We’ll be happy to help you help all of us!

“Woof, woof…woof”

Is that canine for, “I want a treat?” Or is it, “Timmy’s trapped down a well?”
Just how smart are our furry friends and what are our dogs trying to tell us? At 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 6, Behavioral Scientist Clive Wynne, Ph.D., will share his fascination with dogs and describe how their intelligence compares to other animals. Wynne will discuss why he believes, after years of study, that it is dogs’ hearts, rather than their smarts, that make dogs so remarkable.
Wynne, passionate about dogs his entire life, found a way to meld his love of dogs with his professional training. In addition to working as a Professor of Psychology and the Director of Canine Science Collaboratory at Arizona State University, he is also the Director of Research at Wolf Park, a not-for-profit organization in Indiana, dedicated to behavioral research, education and conservation, with the objective of improving people’s understanding of wolves and the value they provide to our environment.
Born and reared on the Isle of Wight off the southern coast of England, he studied at the University College London and received his Ph.D. at Edinburgh University. He has studied animal behavior in Britain, the United States and Australia.
So doggonit, please join us on Monday, November 6 for what is sure to be a fascinating peek into the mind of man’s best friend.
Visit Africa vicariously
Shannon Tyree
Maybe you’ve always wanted to go, but you somehow haven’t planned that African trip yet. At 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 13, you can travel there without leaving PebbleCreek when Fred Krakowiak, photographer, painter and storyteller, brings the magic of Africa alive through his vivid stories, pictures and artwork.
Krakowiak, an authority on wilderness safari on foot, will lead us on a virtual safari, bringing the mood of Africa to us. He believes in total immersion when traveling to Africa, a place where he says your thoughts and concerns are narrowed to what is immediately before your eyes. He takes hundreds of photographs on every safari and records the sounds he hears. Once home, he uses the sketches made afield to create artwork, some of which is done with bronze or oil on copper.
Krakowiak has penned two books, Africa: An Artist’s Safari and The Artist’s Safari. These works were inspired by his awareness that one day his artwork and stories may be all that remain of the majestic creatures he has seen.
Tickets to all Monday Morning lectures are just $4 at the door of the Renaissance Theater and go on sale one hour prior to the 10:00 a.m. event.
Vocational education sure has changed!
Shannon Tyree
Maybe you’re like me and have driven by that big building on Glendale Avenue and asked yourself, “What the heck is West-MEC?” Join us Wednesday, February 7, for more than just a peek inside when we tour two Western Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC) vocational centers.
If the last time you were in a vocational education classroom was during your high school years, you’ll be amazed at what is available now. West-MEC’s slogan is, “A Faster Way Forward,” and on the LifeLong Learning trip you see why today’s students are better prepared for a lucrative career.
At West-MEC, high schoolers and adults train for a wide array of occupations, from avionics to physical therapy, dental assistant to veterinary technology. The school provides the hands-on instruction that propels high school students on to needed and lucrative careers. They also provide a wide variety of curriculum and professional development for adults.
On the trip, you’ll investigate real-life labs where students get real hands-on instruction, visit classrooms where students spend half of their days and learn why leadership development is incorporated into the curriculum. Lunch will be at Tempo Urban Bistro in Verrado. The $55 fee for the trip includes all expenses and you can reserve your seat on the bus online at www.lifelonglearningatpc.org or register in person at the LLL Center, Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to noon.
Sign up for all our trips online or at the LLL Center. Perhaps the next time you drive by that big building on Glendale Avenue, you’ll know the valuable lessons being taught there.
