Lectures Explore Roosevelt, Healthcare

Patricia Ingalls

January features two Premier Lectures ready now for registration online. One presentation immerses the audience in the colorful personality of former president Teddy Roosevelt; the other enhances understanding of the U.S. healthcare system and compares it with other countries’ practices.

Tickets cost $15 and may be purchased in advance online at www.lifelonglearningatpc.org. If available, any unsold tickets may be purchased at the door.

The Teddy Roosevelt Show, Friday, Jan. 13, 7 p.m. Historian and actor Joe Wiegand brings Roosevelt to life through a highly acclaimed portrayal of our 26th president. Wiegand’s live performances, presented at the White House and in all 50 states, deliver insight and context to Roosevelt’s importance and legacy. Wiegand’s portrayal reveals how Roosevelt’s leadership and activism were natural consequences of his life experiences and how his dynamic, resolute personality made him one of our most respected and successful presidents.

U.S. Healthcare from an International Perspective, Friday, Jan. 27, 7 p.m. How does the U.S. healthcare system stack up against other developed nations? Is it the best? What is fact versus fiction, when it comes to global healthcare? Is there a “perfect” system? Why do costs vary so much between Canada and the U.S., especially for drug coverage? What can other countries learn from the U.S. and vice versa?

Robert Smoldt and Natalie Landman, respected and knowledgeable healthcare professionals, will answer those questions and provide insight into the best and worst practices of the U.S. healthcare system.

Build the Life You Want

Bill Nee

To set New Year’s resolutions, many people ask themselves: What do I want to accomplish in 2023? What do I like about my current schedule, and what would I like to change? How do I find time for what matters most?

Time-management expert Laura Vanderkam studies how busy people spend their lives. She has discovered that most people drastically overestimate their commitments each week, while underestimating the time they have to themselves.

Each week has 168 hours. How do we treat our priorities? Vanderkam offers practical strategies to help find more time for what matters to us, so we can “build the lives we want in the time we’ve got.”

She recommends breaking down what we want to accomplish into one of three categories: 1) career, 2) relationships, and 3) self. She suggests placing priority items high on the list in one of those categories, but each category should have several goals.

Next comes planning how to accomplish each item, using action steps to set in motion building the life you want.

To view this priority-focused, 12-minute TED Talk, go to TED.com, click “watch” in the header, then “TED Talks,” then in “Search talks”, input “How to gain control of your free time,” scroll a little lower, and click on the talk you selected.

Interesting, engaging, and enlightening opportunities fill LifeLong Learning’s calendar of offerings for the new year, all described in detail at www.lifelonglearningatpc.org.

“We are very excited to present all the upcoming Lifelong Learning events,” said LLL’s president, Paul Polk. “Our volunteer teams have been working so hard, planning for the community. Lifelong Learning will continue to offer a full range of trips, classes, lectures, and other activities, as we enter 2023.”

Two January trips have sold out, but one can always ask to be added to a trip’s waitlist. At press time, a few spots remained open for the Jan. 26 trip to Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson.

Later trips to come are:

Feb. 21: Dolly Steamboat Nature Cruise and Dinner at Superstition Saloon: A cruise, a visit to a ghost town, and dinner. Online registration opened Dec. 1 at 8 a.m.

Mar. 8: ASU’s School of Earth and Space Exploration—Moon and Mars: Pursuing peeks at planets and beyond. Online registration opens Jan. 3 at 8 a.m.
