A few days prior to Friday, June 19, 2020, Just Folks member Jerome Sims asked the club to leave their porch lights on throughout the night. The light of porch lights was symbolic of freedom’s light being shared June 19, 1865, with Texas slaves. Slavery was outlawed approximately two years earlier through Lincoln’s Emancipation, but the news had not reached Texas. Major General Gordon Granger reiterated the proclamation that all slaves are free and Juneteenth was celebrated joyfully the next year on June 19, 1866. Many organizations and neighbors joined in the celebration of light to mark Juneteenth, on June 19, 2020. We plan to celebrate Juneteenth 2021 in a special way and look forward to sharing this day with our PebbleCreek community. Mark your calendars and plan to join us!
