Which type of battery is a good choice for your golf cart?
When selecting the right batteries for your golf cart, understanding the difference between lead acid and lithium-ion is important. Lithium batteries are better for golf cart performance and longevity than lead acid batteries. However, the upfront cost of lithium batteries is higher. One has to weigh the initial investment against the long-term benefits to make an informed decision. Let’s explore a few differences between the two types of batteries.
Lead Acid
Lead acid batteries are affordable and reliable, making them a popular option. Such batteries last about four years before needing replacement. However, these batteries require frequent maintenance including proper filling of water, cleaning of terminals, correct charging, and proper non-use care (especially important for snowbirds). As a result, many golf cart owners may get less than four years of life out of their batteries, especially in the Arizona heat. Those who leave for the summer often return to a non-working cart. If you need a battery for only a few years, or your golf cart has lost its value, and you can maintain the cart properly, lead acid is probably your best bet.
Lithium–Ion
High quality lithium batteries are more expensive upfront, but they last about two-three times longer than lead acid batteries. Another advantage is that lithium batteries require less maintenance, which is great for snowbirds. No checking for proper water levels, and no acid spilling on your garage floor, ruining your coating or concrete. You can simply charge and turn off your battery, and then turn it back on when you return and be on your way! With fewer replacements and lower maintenance costs, lithium can be or more affordable than lead acid batteries in the long run. If you plan to keep your golf cart for at least five years, or simply want less maintenance, especially in the summer months, lithium is likely your best choice.
