The Rug Hookers of PebbleCreek have introduced you to Monika Jones in a previous article (March 2014). Monika is one of the original members of the group and the member who gives us more visibility through her classes and original designs. However, Monika even outdid herself recently. She was commissioned to create a wool floor rug for a client who gave Monika full reign in the design and color combination. The only specification was that the wool rug be five x eight feet in dimension. Monika said that this made the project easier and she created something that she herself would want in her home.
The picture shows the finished product. It took her five weeks to complete it! Early on in the process she brought it to our rug hooking group, but once the work progressed and the rug got heavier and more bulky, she was unable to lug it into the Creative Arts Center. She admitted that she needed the assistance of her husband, Lloyd, to help her move it around the floor frame she worked on at home, draping part of the rug over the back of her couch for support.
In addition to designing the floral pattern and hooking the rug, Monika overdyed the wool used in the rug creating a unique and distinctive work of art. Considering the individual who commissioned this rug is a rug hooker herself, this is truly an honor and vote of confidence.
The Rug Hookers meet every Monday afternoon from noon to 4:00 p.m. throughout the summer in the Fiber Arts Room in the Creative Arts Center. For further information, contact our current club President Karen Lubahn at [email protected] or phone her at 623-935-9045.
