Early birds beat the heat on the courts

Rana Cukierski

The heat is on! Tennis players are arriving on the courts at 6:30 a.m. to beat the heat and enjoy fun tennis. I would like to address two issues about the sun and the heat. It is very important to lather on the sun screen/block. Keep in mind just because we may have clouds the UV rays are actually worse. Don’t forget the ears, nose and the back of the neck, shoulders and hands. Next is dehydration. I can say first hand since I suffered five days last month; it is horrible. Men need a minimum of 120 ounces of fluid a day; women need a minimum of 96 ounces of fluid a day (and not vodka). In this dry climate that is bare minimum. A combination of electrolyte sports drink, water or Pedialyte diluted with water are excellent choices. Drink at least 8 eight ounces before you play and after. Cold towels are also great during play and for cool downs.

President Jerry Santy continues to communicate with the tennis pro at the Goodyear Parks and Recreation Department. We are still in need of tennis racquets and bags you are not using. We certainly appreciate your donations; just drop them off at the Tuscany Tennis Center in the box marked donations. In addition to our racquet program, the pro has asked Jerry if he would find some members to hit with young up and coming tennis players to practice. So we are helping out the future tennis stars and involved in our community!

Exciting news on our website! Jill Santy, our assistant webmaster, has been working with our web developers to have the ability for every member’s picture next to his/her name on our membership list. It is much easier to match the face with the name. Jill will give more details at our July 17 social. One more step to updating technology on our website.
