Dementia holiday survival skills

Teri Sellers

The next meeting of the Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group is Dec. 21.

This is a group dedicated to the education and support of those PebbleCreek residents that have a loved one with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or a related dementia.

Christmas and New Years are very festive holidays, full of family, laughter, food and cheer. When your loved one has Alzheimer’s or dementia, that changes. But that doesn’t have to mean that you ignore the festivities or forget to laugh and enjoy the specialness that these holidays bring.

In December, Sylvia and I like to treat the caregivers to something special. For 365 days a year, caregivers give of themselves to the care, needs, and attention of their loved one. For just a short time, we will make the caregiver the focus of our attention and love.

We have planned a very special morning that will include some special holiday treats and a program on how to make the most of this time of year. There is so much you can do for yourself and your loved one to make this Christmas special and we want to share that with you. December sounds like a meeting you will not want to miss.

Respite care

We may be able to provide free respite care for those with Alzheimer’s/Dementia during the caregiver meeting. This will allow the caregiver the opportunity and peace of mind to attend the discussion group. Please call me with your RSVP no later than Tuesday, Dec. 17.

Monthly breakfast

A more casual opportunity to meet and share with other caregivers is the first Saturday of each month. We will meet at Eagle’s Nest for breakfast and ‘just talk’. Getting to know other caregivers can be very supportive and helpful as the journey of this disease can be challenging. RSVP is required by Nov. 28 for the Dec. 1 breakfast.

For information or to RSVP for respite care or the breakfast, contact Teri Sellers at 602-793-0299 or [email protected].
