The next meeting of the Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group is January 19.
Alzheimer’s disease has a profound emotional impact on the family members who must cope with a loved one’s irrevocable decline. There are many legal and financial issues that need to be addressed as quickly as possible, but family members often report that the day-to-day challenges of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s weigh far more heavily.
It’s important to remember that the abilities of a person with Alzheimer’s disease can fluctuate from day to day and even from hour to hour, for the same reasons that abilities fluctuate in healthy people: fatigue, anxiety, discomfort, illness or medication effects. Uneven loss of abilities can be especially confusing. Someone with Alzheimer’s may be able to perform some complex tasks better than simple ones and family members may wrongly attribute this to “not trying hard enough” or being deliberately uncooperative.
People with Alzheimer’s may be able to manage certain self-care tasks early on, but they will require more and more help as the disease progresses. Whether you are the primary caregiver or assisting someone who is, several strategies can help improve quality of life for both you and your loved one.
Challenges present themselves not only for those living with dementia but for the caregivers as well. In this talk, Cheryl will share effective strategies for communicating with loved ones with dementia. Please come with questions or situations you would like Cheryl to address.
About the speaker: Cheryl joined Silverado Memory Care as Director of Resident and Family Services in December of 2015. Cheryl appreciates that her experience as an Educator, Therapist and Life Coach all contribute to the work she now does with people with dementia. Community outreach and educating the public on this rapidly growing disease is very important to Cheryl and she is grateful to have the opportunity to serve in this way.
Respite Care
We may be able to provide free respite care for those with Alzheimer’s/Dementia during the caregiver meeting. This will allow the caregiver the opportunity and peace of mind to attend the discussion group. Please call me with your RSVP no later than Tuesday, January 15.
Monthly Breakfast
A more casual opportunity to meet and share with other caregivers is the first Saturday of each month. We will meet at Eagle’s Nest for breakfast and just talk. Getting to know other caregivers can be very supportive and helpful as the journey of this disease can be challenging. RSVP is required by January 2 for the January 5 breakfast.
For information or to RSVP for respite care or the breakfast, please call Teri Sellers at 602-793-0299 or email [email protected].
