Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease impacts every aspect of daily life. As an Alzheimer’s patient loses one ability after another, caregivers face tests of stamina, problem solving and resiliency. During this long and difficult journey, communication diminishes, rewards decrease and without strong support, caretakers face challenges to their own wellbeing.
Preparing and protecting yourself, working to understand your loved one’s experience and embracing help from others can help to minimize the hazards and enhance the joys of your caregiving experience. Learning all you can about what is happening and what to expect not only helps your loved one, it is the first step towards protecting your total health. Please know you are not alone. We would love to have you attend our Caregivers Discussion Group. Please bring your questions and be prepared to learn something new from others going through the same challenges. This month we will meet on Saturday, January 17 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
The Saturday Group is for those having Alzheimer’s disease. This group allows caregivers the opportunity and peace of mind to attend the Caregiver’s Discussion Group. Two wonderful PebbleCreek volunteers, who have experience with Alzheimer’s disease, run the group. Carol Smail, a retired nurse, has a business that works with seniors. It provides respite care for caregivers. Bert Miller assisted with a similar program for those having Alzheimer’s disease prior to her move to PebbleCreek. She also co-facilitated a monthly caregiver support group. Carol and Bert want to make this time away from a loved one as comfortable and stress free as possible. They plan on having activities and refreshments. An RSVP by January 15 is required in order for loved ones to participate in this special activity.
Both groups meet at the same time at different locations and the places sometimes change. Please contact Rayma Scalzo at 623-935-1819 or email her at [email protected] for more detailed information.
