Ceramics Club June Featured Artist: Walt Smith

Walt grew up in the Los Angeles area. Post high school, he joined the Marines and served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. He later earned a bachelor’s degree from Long Beach State and built a successful 35-year career with Allstate. After marrying Diana Horton, the family settled in West Hills, Calif. They retired to PebbleCreek in 2017 and remain active in the arts community.

A friendly member of the Ceramics Club, Walt is known for his warm smile and welcoming nature. Since 2021, he has remained engaged in ceramics, drawn by both the camaraderie of the club and the creativity of making new pieces.

Over time, Walt has grown in both skill and confidence. He enjoys the precision of detailed work and brings each piece to life with care. He modestly says he never knew he could do ceramics, but with the guidance and encouragement of instructor Kelli Frederickson, he has completed many projects.

Walt’s preferred motifs are Christmas themed. A charming example of that is his Christmas reindeer. Using the technique known as “pouncing,” the reindeer’s sweater looks as if it is made from real wool yarn! In another creation, Walt shows his expertise in the very detailed Christmas platter that required precise use of his brushes to complete the cheerful look of a dish any hostess would be happy to use.

Without reservation, Walt enjoys the challenge of ceramics but asserts that it is the personal connection with a great group of people that he treasures most. We are so happy to enjoy your company too, Walt!
