On May 8, the PebbleCreek Billiards Club (PCBC) and CantaMia (CM) Billiards Club put on an action-packed day of competitive 8-ball, with matches split between the two communities. Four CM players traveled to PebbleCreek in the morning, while four PCBC players made the trip to CantaMia in the afternoon.
The overall contest was very close, with CM winning the combined game count 53-48. Home teams did not hold the advantage, however. CM dominated the morning session at PebbleCreek 32-20, while PCBC swept the afternoon at CantaMia 28-21.
Morning Session at PebbleCreek (CM Wins 32–20)
First Match: Round-Robin (32 games)
Each PCBC player faced every CM opponent twice. The match was tight early, with PCBC holding a slim 9-8 lead at the halfway point. CM then surged, highlighted by Craig Jones sinking the 8-ball on the break. CM won 10 of the next 11 games to eventually take the match 20-12. CM’s James Fogerty was outstanding, winning all eight of his games. For PCBC, Dan Harris turned in the top performance at 6-2.
Second Match: Ranked Heads-Up (20 games)
Players were paired according to their round-robin results for five rounds. The teams traded games early, but CM gained momentum and pulled out a 12-8 victory – despite PCBC’s Mike Finnegan sinking the 8-ball on the break. Don Moser (PCBC) and James Fogerty and Ted Armstrong (CM) each won four of their five games.
Afternoon Session at CantaMia (PCBC Wins 28–21)
First Match: Round-Robin (16 games)
PCBC jumped out strong, winning seven of the first ten games en route to a 10-6 victory. PCBC’s Blair Dreyfus led all players by winning all four of his games.
Second Match: Round-Robin (16 games)
PCBC took the first four games quickly, then held off a CM comeback to win 9-7. Rene Lefebvre (PCBC) and Paul Hermann and Tom Juliano (CM) each won three of their four games.
Third Match: Ranked Heads-Up (16 games + tiebreaker)
Paired by round-robin performance, the teams battled evenly through four rounds, finishing the 16 games tied at 8-8. Rene Lefebvre and Paul Hermann played a decisive tiebreaker game, with Lefebvre’s steady play securing the victory for PCBC.
It was a long but fun day filled with excellent shot-making, plenty of laughs, and strong sportsmanship. A rematch is already scheduled!
