Exploring Mackinac Island and More in Michigan

Ellie Daly

Recently 18 Creekers flew to Detroit with destination Mackinac Island obtained only by ferry crossing from Mackinaw City. Expectations were met, including dining at the world’s longest luncheon buffet in the Grand Hotel, the hotel that embraced world renowned swimmer Esther Williams and famous for the filming of the 1980 movie “Somewhere in Time,” a romantic fantasy starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. The group enjoyed a horse drawn carriage tour of the island and fortress and unforgettable exceptional dining, indulging Mackinac Islands renowned fudge and cherry wine. Michigan is the largest producer of cherries in the country.

This tour wasn’t just Mackinac Island, it also included Franken Smith, Mich., a Bavarian town noted for its medieval stylist shops, restaurants, mouthwatering pastries, and world famous Bronners Christmas Wonderland.

Continuing toward our departure from Detroit, there was a visit to the Motown Museum; the Heidelberg Project; Cullen Plaza; Detroit Riverwalk and a view of Ottawa, Canada, across the Detroit River; the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation; Greenfield Village; Frederick Meijer Garden and Sculpture Park; and last but not least Mears, Michigan’s famous Mac Woods Dune ride.

These 18 strangers bonded like longtime friends and together enjoyed a great trip from their “bucket list.”
