Vicky Ferraresi
Join us on Monday, April 8 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Eagle’s Nest Palm Room for the next PebbleCreek Genealogy Club (PCGC) meeting. Guests are always welcome!
The theme of this month’s program is “American Migration.” Our speaker on Monday, April 8 is Emily H. Garber, who will provide an introduction to Jewish genealogy. An archaeologist by training (B.A. and M.A.), Emily Garber has been researching her Jewish family heritage since 2007 and holds a certificate from Boston University’s Genealogical Research program. She is a family history researcher, writer, and speaker, and owns Extra Yad Genealogical Services,
blogging at extrayad.blogspot.com, has written two books and several articles on genealogical research. She serves as chair of the Phoenix Jewish Genealogy Group and board member of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies and the Arizona Jewish Historical Society. Emily has spoken at NGS (National Genealogical Society) and IAJGS (International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies) conferences and coordinated week-long Jewish genealogy seminars for the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy.
The Tips and Tricks presentation on Using JewishGen—the Global Home for Jewish Genealogy by Vicky Ferraresi will kick off the meeting at 9 a.m. The speaker will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the Business Meeting, Special Interest Groups, and Members Helping Members. Bring your laptop computer, tablet, family tree, documents, etc. if you need assistance with any aspect of genealogy.
Our own Denise Beeson will present “European Migration to America—Why Did They Come?” at the Litchfield Park Library Community Room on April 18, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. She will discuss ancestors who were living in various European countries and the “push and pull” of their lives that brought them to America.
Looking forward, as a follow up to International Women’s Day, our May 13 meeting will focus on female ancestors.
What have we been up to? Our March meeting featured Tom Jenney who discussed the McClelland Irish Library. The library, in downtown Phoenix, has a wealth of genealogical resources available to people digging for their roots—especially their Irish and Irish-American roots. Tom shared family secrets he uncovered as part of his own genealogical searches!
An “Antique Roadshow” came to PebbleCreek! Genealogy Club members had a free appraisal of up to three items by E J Auctions and Appraisals. Just like the program we’ve all seen, there were some nice surprises! A big thank you goes to E J Auctions and Appraisals for supporting this wonderful event.
Several PCGC members attended the West Valley Genealogical Society Annual Seminar on Feb. 17 for a day of genealogy education “Digging Deeper for Our Roots” presented by Rich Venezia. Topics were Discovering Your Immigrant’s Origins: Digging Deeper, Military Records and Immigrant Ancestors, Alien Registrations in America, and Emerald Isle Express: Researching Irish Ancestors.
