On Wednesday, March 4 the PebbleCreek Softball League held its fifteenth annual golf tournament on the Tuscany Falls and Palms Courses. The teams were comprised of 114 active and retired softball players, both male and female, and a number of key sponsors. The format was a Four Person Scramble with the players competing in three flights for top honors. Prior to play, Jim Beyers, Events Director for the League, made sure all participants had water and energy bars and Ronnie Decker, one of our Golf Pros, covered all the details for the game.
At the conclusion of the tournament, all players reconvened at the softball Field of Dreams for lunch, prize drawings and the announcement of the golf winners. League President Chuck Tredway was Master of Ceremonies and handled all of the duties in a very smooth and professional manner.
There were numerous gifts awarded to the attendees which were funded by our raffle ticket sales. In addition, this year the 50/50 raffle was split 50% for the league and 50% was split six ways to make it more appealing for the participants. Also added this year was a Cigar Raffle that was very successful.
Next up was the disclosure of the Closest to the Pin (K-P) winners, who were Falls No. 4 – Fred Cochrane, Falls No. 8 – Tim Spooner (sponsor), Palms No. 4 – Rick Boes (sponsor) and Palms No. 8 – Tim Spooner again.
The winners of the three flights were as follows: First Flight – Fred Cochrane, Dee Cuttell, Larry Dick and Bill Gainer. Second Flight – Dan Anderson, Rick Boes (sponsor/Augies), Manny Maciel and DaD Ryan (sponsor – Islands Burgers). Third Flight – Kevin Bentson, John Brown, Don Decoste and Ron Johnson.
Special recognition should be given to the following volunteers who made the event so successful:
Dick Gwilt, who once again took care of the setting up of the tents, tables and chairs as well making sure all beverages were iced down and ready for the golfers at lunch.
Donnie Moore and Sammy Roberts for their usual great job in selling raffle tickets.
Billy Connell and Larry Karr for selling cigar raffle tickets.
Jack Arrango, Barry Solomon, Kenny Kurtz, Hank Mailloux and Cass Koziara for manning the registration tables and collecting the entry fees.
Bill Gainer and Ronnie Decker for handling all of the details pertaining to the golf, i.e., flights, handicaps, and scorecards.
Lee Ayers for his efforts in collecting prize donations and his recruitment of retired players to participate in the outing.
Marketing Director Al Chandler for inviting the sponsors to play, soliciting gifts for raffle and promoting the cigar raffle.
We must also thank Mike Donaghu who provided a PA system for the awards ceremony.
Last, but not least, we thank the wives of the ball players who assisted with the after party and the clean-up.
To sum up, we had beautiful weather, a great lunch and a fun day was had by all.
