Members are not the only workers at the railroad

Mark Pelletier

Every month at the end of these articles we tell you that we are “workin’ on the railroad” on Tuesdays and Thursdays. But work is always going on around the Great Lakes Western Railroad. As you can see, a team of three men is busy painting the roof of the unloading shed at the plastics factory. The operator in the tower – who came to work in his 1960s VW – controls the crossover preventing any collisions.

They won’t let us fill up the whole issue of the Post with the numerous other scenes, so you’ll have to visit us to search for more. Will you find the cop investigating a minor traffic accident, miners in the limestone quarry, men fueling the locomotives or enginemen getting ready for their next run?

There is also a lot of non-work activity. The platform at Rockford is crowded with passengers waiting for their train. Boys play baseball at the ballpark watched by interested spectators. Folks fish and canoe along the river. And can you tell why the sunbathers are under the bridge?

So as much as we like you to visit with us personally, come and take the time to visit all the little people, too! On the web: pcmrc.org
