Two chances to learn and fine dine

LLL has two trips scheduled to visit the Arizona Culinary Institute in Scottsdale. Tour this cooking school, which was established in 2002, and then enjoy lunch prepared and served by the students. Students can concentrate on cooking, baking, restaurant management or food and beverage management.

The school emphasizes small classes and hands-on learning to prepare their students for their careers. Join LLL on either December 14 or January 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to experience a glimpse into the world of food preparation and presentation. Registration is $50, which includes bus transportation, gratuities and lunch, and opens Monday, October 1, at 8:00 a.m.

Learn about the West with LifeLong Learning

Emily Grotta

Have you ever wished to revisit the Wild West you knew through Gene Autrey, Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers and the Lone Ranger?

This season, LifeLong Learning has trips, classes and lectures to bring the West, both old and new, to life.

Cattle have always figured prominently in Arizona, and you can see them up close and in person on the December 29 trip to the Arizona National Livestock Show. And on February 16, join LifeLong Learning on a trip to La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, aka the Tucson Rodeo, one of the nation’s top professional rodeos.

By now, you may have crossed Route 66 in your travels around the country, but do you know its history and the best places to see what remains of this colorful highway? On Monday, January 7, Marshall Shore will take us on a journey down the “Mother Road” in a multi-media presentation that includes music and video clips.

On February 8, explore the history, art and rich, cultural heritage of the North American West at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. Then witness the mid-day arrival at the museum of the Hashknife Pony Express.

Interested in the conflicts between Native Americans and the U.S. Army? Dick Falor has developed a fascinating PowerPoint to accompany his four-part class on the conflicts in the northern plains, including Red Cloud’s war, the Fetterman fight, Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee. You’ll discuss the aftermath of those conflicts through the present time, as well as the major figures involved in them, including Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and others of interest.

Other classes offered this season in which you’ll learn about Arizona, old and new, include “Critters of the Desert” and “Petroglyphs and Hohokam Culture”.

So, whether you’re new to Arizona or have been here long enough to consider yourself a native, there’s always something new to learn about the state you call home. Go to www.lifelonglearningatpc.org to register for classes and trips or stop by the LLL Center during office hours to learn more about the programs offered.
