Yearly Pheasant and Chukar Shoot a Success

Eleven gun club members enjoyed a day of hunting pheasant and chukar.

Members of PebbleCreek’s Gun Club took to the fields in early February for the club’s annual pheasant and chukar shoot at Desert Creek Sportsman’s Club in Palo Verde near Buckeye.

Club members meet Tuesdays for trap shooting, which simulates bird hunting, but there’s nothing like being in an open field on a sunny day looking for the real thing. “Hunting is fun,” said Dan Borchers, the club’s vice president. “It’s harder to hit a moving target that’s unpredictable compared to a clay target.”

The 11 hunters split into smaller groups to work a field with a guide and dog. The challenge begins when the dog points at a bird hiding in the brush. The guide flushes the bird out, and a moving target is released for the hunter. “Watching the dogs work is as much fun as pulling the trigger,” Dan Borchers said.

Each member of the group took home five or six chukars and a pheasant, cleaned and ready to cook. In fact, one member had his birds on the grill the next day.

Shooters of all levels are welcome to join the gun club for trap/skeet shooting on Tuesdays and pistol/rifle shooting on Fridays at the Joe Foss public shooting range in Buckeye. Contact Jerry Younker, club president, at [email protected] for more information.
