WomenHeart Discussion Group

Rusty Rinehart

For any woman with or at risk for heart disease, WomenHeart is for you! If you’ve had a problem with your heart and you are now doing well, is this group for you? Absolutely! We are always able to improve our chances of staying well or improving our heart health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women, six times as great as all types of cancer combined. 35% of women but only 18% of men will die of another heart attack after surviving the first one. Why? Come to WomenHeart and learn how different the heart of a woman is from that of men. Women are only in 25% of the studies of heart disease. Is it any wonder then that women are much less likely than men to receive beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors or even aspirin after a heart attack?

This fall we have some interesting speakers scheduled:

September 16: Dr. L. Nyabero, PharmD, will speak about anticoagulants, beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors; their actions, side effects and awareness of individual response to them.

October 21: Goodyear’s paramedics will talk about identifying when you need to call 911; what happens when they arrive and why we should never try to drive ourselves or our loved one to the hospital.

November 18: Christine Spiel, Cardiac Physiologist, will speak about cardiac rehabilitation units; why women do not avail themselves of this service after a heart event and why they need to do so.

December is holiday time; have a healthy and happy one with your friends and loved ones. See you all in January with new and interesting speakers and activities.

Meetings are the third Wednesday of every month from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. in Room 100 in the Activity Center in Eagle’s Nest at 3657 Clubhouse Drive.
