Veterans Day

Every year on November 11 we get the incredible opportunity to thank those that have served in the United States Armed Forces. This day is known to all Americans as Veterans Day.

Did you know that Veterans Day used to be called Armistice Day? It originally came into effect to commemorate the major hostilities of World War I ending on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. However, in 1945, a World War II veteran by the name of Raymond Weeks suggested that this day honor all veterans, not only those that did not return from battle. Thus, Veterans Day came to be.

Veterans Day celebrates the service of those men and women who have fought and continue fighting to keep our great nation safe. It also serves as a dedication to preserving world peace.

There are currently about 21 million veterans alive today in the United States of America and 522,188 live in Arizona, according to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs statistics from 2015, the most recent numbers available. That’s almost eight percent of the population! What an incredible number of people who gave a great sacrifice to keep our country safe and free.

So, on November 11, whatever way you choose to say it – “Thank you for your service”, “Happy Veterans Day” or a simple “Thank you” with a handshake – don’t forget to thank a veteran!
