Unit Happenings – June 2024

Unit 18 Ladies’ Luncheon Celebrates Over Wine, Mai Tais, and Good Food

In a fusion of flavors and friendships, the women of Unit 18 transformed P.F. Chang’s into a hub of laughter, good times, and a great meal during their ladies’ luncheon on March 27. As the luncheon wrapped up, the amazing women of Unit 18 left the restaurant, proving again that good food and great company are the ultimate recipe for an amazing day out. Thanks to the luncheon organizers, Beverly Drury and Jenny Munson.

Unit 20 Spring Dinner

Peggy Pase

Twenty-three neighbors from Unit 20 met at Eest Asian Bistro on April 16. We enjoyed a delicious meal together and got a chance to visit with each other before some of us left to enjoy a cooler summer elsewhere. We are all looking forward to getting together again in the fall. Thanks to Rosemary DeAngelo for making all of the arrangements. (Photo by Peggy Pase)

Unit 26 End-of-Season Happy Hour

Gena Wikstrom

Neighbors of Unit 26 celebrated the end of the season with a happy hour on April 18 at the home of Judy Alexander. Saying goodbye to our snowbird neighbors until September, we all enjoyed time sharing plans for adventures during the summer—vacations, weddings, graduations, and so much more—and wishing each other safe and happy travels.

Unit 37 Volunteers at St. Mary’s Food Bank

A small group from Unit 37 spent the morning of April 16 at St. Mary’s Food Bank and assisted with the assembly of 1,200 emergency backpacks to feed hungry children in our community.

Unit 44 Gets Groovy

Jean Harris

Unit 44’s Gwen DeBernardi hosted a groovy-themed party on the patio on the beautiful evening of May 3. Long-haired hippies mingled with the go-go boots and platform shoes set as the group enjoyed salad, pizza, and Gwen’s fabulous charcuterie board nibbles. Resident baker extraordinaire Ron Baron provided the chocolate candies and mint chocolate-dipped Oreo cookies. Groovy times in Unit 44 will continue as we say goodbye to our snowbird neighbors for the summer.

It Was 5 o’Clock Somewhere for Unit 44’s Party on the Patio

Jean Harris

It was 5 o’clock somewhere for Unit 44’s Margaritaville-themed Party on the Patio on April 18. With no change in latitude, but with a big change in attitude, the group gathered at the Oasis Pool where longtime Jimmy Buffett fans, Ken and Diane Russo, set up to host. The Russos graciously provided margaritas and tacos and brought the lost shaker of salt. Decked out in beach attire, and leis provided by Ken and Diane, the group enjoyed a fun night highlighted with a group vocal rendition of “Too Drunk to Karaoke.” Come Monday, the group was still smiling and thankful for our good fortune of living in Unit 44!

A Beautiful Night for Unit 44’s Bunco Fun

Jean Harris

Unit 44’s monthly Bunco fun continued on the beautiful night of April 17. Neighbors and friends watched the sunset and (mostly) tallied scores well as we rolled the dice and expressed gratitude at being together in our lovely community. By table, clockwise from left to right, are: Barbara Kamm, Deb Fahey, Laurie Jamieson, Laurie Eickhorn; Debbie Baron, Jody Hoff, Maria Hummel, Jean Harris; Deborah Crabtree, Marilee White, Peggy Hayner, and Jane Barnhart.

Unit 46 Ladies on the Patio

Fifteen ladies from Unit 46 got together on April 17 to enjoy some excellent weather, delicious food, and friendly conversation. The scenic outside patio at Eagle’s Nest Restaurant was a perfect venue for the ladies’ monthly luncheon, which occurs on the third Wednesday each month, coincidentally the same day as the Unit 46 men’s breakfast. Both events successfully result in new neighbors discussing our recent relocation to PebbleCreek, excitement to be in a new community, meeting new friends, etc.

With more and more new neighbors moving in each month, Unit 46 is PebbleCreek’s fastest growing neighborhood.

Exciting times are ahead!

Unit 51 May Luncheon

Janet Miazga

Sixteen lovely ladies from Unit 51 gathered for our last regular luncheon of the season. Irene Jensen hosted for the month of May at Verrado Grille and provided each of us with a lovely hand fan to use once the weather gets hot. We all enjoyed talking about our upcoming summer plans and goodbyes were said to those who would be leaving soon for their other home or travels. We have a great group of lady friends in our Unit and truly enjoy getting together. Until next fall, best wishes to all!

Unit 51 Ladies Dine at Lakeside Grill Estrella

Janet Miazga

On April 11, Jerri Christensen and Vicki Carter hosted our Unit 51 Ladies’ Luncheon at Lakeside Grill Estrella, a lovely venue set near a lake and the mountains. This outing was attended by 24 ladies, including Dee Blount’s two daughters and Karen McFall’s daughter-in-law, all visiting from out of town. The hostesses decorated the tables for spring/belated Easter and provided each of us with a dish of chocolates. It was nice to have such a large group gather together, especially since some will be leaving for their summer homes before our next luncheon. Here’s wishing a wonderful summer for all of Unit 51!

Unit 54 Breakfast

PebbleCreek Unit 54 “Boys at the Bar” enjoyed breakfast on May 10.

Unit 58 Men’s Breakfast

It was “all hands on deck” for the April episode of the PebbleCreek Unit 58 men’s breakfast group. We had a total of 19 eager eaters attending on a beautiful spring morning, dining on the patio of the Eagle’s Nest restaurant. Our server, Alexis, took very good care of the hungry mouths that needed feeding, despite the heavy workload facing her between our group and the other customers she attended to indoors.

The scene across the golf course and the lake was too good to be passed up.

We intend to continue our monthly breakfast sessions through the summer months, so long as we have diners wishing to participate.

Unit 58 Pickleball Group Takes a Field Trip

Ed Raker

The Unit 58 pickleballers like to socialize, both at the courts and elsewhere. As an example, on April 28 a contingent of about 20 of us spent a pleasant afternoon at the Corral at White Tank Ranch. It’s a cowboy-themed outdoor bar and restaurant on Olive Avenue, just outside the gates of White Tank Mountains Regional Park.

There we had great food and drinks, all of which were quite reasonably priced. And we enjoyed live country music while taking in the desert scenery surrounding us. Families with small children practiced their skills at cornhole and make-believe cattle roping.

From that point we could even view the skyline of downtown Phoenix, as well as State Farm Stadium. As sometimes happens, we even made some new friends along the way. Just one more event making memories.

Unit 58 Ladies’ Lunch at Firebirds

Brenda Deckard, Unit 58 Activities Coordinator

On April 11, Unit 58 held a ladies’ luncheon at the Firebirds Wood Fired Grill. Everyone enjoyed the food and they took excellent care of us. We always enjoy getting together to get to know each other more. Friendships are priceless! Those in attendance were: Deb Bouquet, Deb Riley, Sue Bohl, LaVerne Bartoli, Barb Crass, Connie Mylak, Ruth Price, Pauline Georgakis, Brenda Deckard, Barb Grant, Robbi Lowe, Lynn Jacobson, Vicky Lynch, Beverly Kearsley, Susan Conrad, and Vicky Roelker.

Those partaking in the evening’s event were (seated) Patti Trapp, Cathe Pruyn, Julie Greenbank, Laurie Wyman, Marilyn Coates, (standing) Dee Andes, Barb Downey, Lynn Banks, Jackie Bachmann, Toni Erickson, and Renee Fisher.

May 62A Books N Booze

Toni Erickson

On May 7, 62A book enthusiasts gathered at Barb Downey’s residence for an evening of literary discussion and libations. Dubbed “Books N Booze,” this event is dedicated to exchanging thoughts on recent reads over a shared passion for literature. Participants freely swap books, fostering a communal exchange of ideas and recommendations. All are encouraged to join, regardless of whether they’ve finished a book or not, making it an inclusive gathering conducive to discovering new literary treasures.

Unit 62A cruisers: Standing are Bob and Toni Erickson, Maynard and Sheryl Lipp, Lynn Banks, Barb Downey, Renee Fisher, Marilyn Coates, and Bruce Banks, and seated are Sandy and Gary Bomar.

Unit 62A April Happy Hour

Toni Erickson

Unit 62A gathered for a delightful happy hour on April 24 at the charming residence and backyard of John and Mary Geraghty, commencing at 5 p.m. The evening offered a picturesque setting for neighbors to mingle, indulge in appetizers and desserts, and enjoy each other’s company. A heartwarming moment captured in the photo depicts John giving his beloved wife, Mary, a tender peck on the cheek.

April Ladies’ Lunch for 62A

Toni Erickson

On April 26, the ladies gathered for a delightful lunch at Lakeside Grill, a beloved spot along Estrella Parkway boasting a picturesque lake view. Despite the heat and time constraints, they opted out of their usual post-lunch stroll around the lake. Nonetheless, the eight ladies—Barb Downey, Bonnie Springer, Jackie Bachmann, Renee Fisher, Paula Hupka, Julie Greenbank, Marilyn Coates, and Toni Erickson—enjoyed the breezy outdoor ambiance, embracing the warmth of the day.

Unit 62A Sunset Cruise

Toni Erickson

On April 18, several residents from Unit 62A enjoyed a 105-minute sunset cruise at Lake Pleasant, featuring live entertainment by a local artist. A full-service bar was available, along with drinks and snacks for purchase. Instead of dining on the cruise, our group opted to eat at Dillons restaurant located near the dock. The cruise departed at 6 p.m. and returned to the dock around 8 p.m., providing two hours of enjoyment. The cost was $30 per person, and everyone had an enjoyable time. Additionally, many attendees visited “The Wall That Heals,” situated on the same property. This three-quarter scale traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., featured 58,281 names, along with a mobile education center.

62B King Invitational Golf Scramble

On April 13, Lynn and Brian King hosted the second annual nine-hole golf scramble and social afterwards at Eagle’s Nest. Twenty two-person teams participated in the nine-hole scramble. Prizes were awarded for golf and raffles at the social after all teams reported in. Team awards included low gross, low net, closest to pin, fewest putts, and longest putt.

We want to thank our sponsors for their continued support and generous contributions: Van’s Golf, Tailgaters, Haymakers, Red Robin, Old Chicago, and many others.

Everyone enjoyed the golf and meeting some neighbors for the first time. We look forward to next year with more golf and surprises. Mark your calendar for April 12, 2025 (second Saturday in April).

Del Webb Sun Cities Museum and April Ladies’ Luncheon

Before the monthly ladies’ luncheon on April 25, 20 Unit 62B ladies toured the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum. One of the original model homes houses the museum at 10801 W. Oakmont Drive in Sun City; the structure is placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The museum showcases not only the history of the Sun Cities, but also the incredible life of Del E. Webb and the fascinating story of his dream and commitment to the active lifestyle for retired people. What an incredible vision (and what a difference between the home size of 1960 and today)! Later the ladies met at the Vig Restaurant at Park West for a lovely lunch before a little “retail therapy” at the convenient shops nearby.
