Unit Happenings – January 2025

Unit 8 Olive Garden Lunch

Alisa Moore

The ladies of Unit 8 had a wonderful lunch at Olive Garden in November, where the conversation focused on the upcoming November and December holidays, seeing family and friends, and celebrating the end of another terrific year at PebbleCreek. Any women living in Unit 8 (full or part time) who are interested in joining us for the monthly luncheons and other activities, please contact Jane Holdcroft at [email protected]. Unit 12 November Lunch

Cathy Howell

Some of the ladies in Unit 12 got together at The Cheesecake Factory for lunch in November. It was great catching up with our neighbors to see what was ahead for the holiday season.

Unit 20 November Ladies’ Lunch

Peggy Pase

The ladies of unit 20 met for lunch on Nov. 12 at Old Chicago. We enjoyed delicious lunch specials, welcoming back our winter residents, and visiting with each other. Thanks to Lois Hanson for making the arrangements. We then looked forward to getting together again for our unit happy hour and our Christmas luncheon at the Eagle’s Nest restaurant in December. Unit 20 Happy Hour

Peggy Pase

Unit 20 celebrated beautiful fall weather and the return of our winter neighbors with a happy hour appetizer party at Leon and Eileen Mosse’s on Nov. 17. We enjoyed tasting all the appetizers that residents brought, meeting new neighbors, and catching up with each other. We look forward to more unit events coming up! (Photo by Peggy Pase)

Unit 27A Breakfast with Romeo!

No, these fellas have nothing to do with Shakespeare! These “Romeo” guys are proud to be “Retired Old Men Eating Out!” For several years now, these neighbors have gathered on Friday mornings for breakfast at Eagle’s Nest to ponder the latest advances in medical challenges … to try to solve modern engineering tasks … and, best of all, to reminisce about those good ol’ days!

Unit 27D Happy Hour

Suzanne Rambach

Many residents of Unit 27D enjoyed a Welcome Fall Happy Hour at the Oasis Pool. Everyone brought an appetizer or a dessert and their beverage. Many thanks to Linda Shaver and Joanne Salzmann for coordinating this fun event!

Unit 40’s Welcome Back Party

Unit 40’s annual Welcome Back Party was held on Nov. 17. Forty-eight people attended and had a great time at the cul-de-sac event, catching up with neighbors and enjoying catered Mexican food. Thanks to the Unit’s Social Committee: Marianne Boechler, DeeDee Fast, Jerry Hausner, and Jeff Young.

Unit 42B Happy Hour

We welcomed back our snowbirds with a fun happy hour at the Oasis Pool.

Units 43A and 51 Pajama Drive

Karen Bush

After a month-long pajama drive by Unit 43A and Unit 51, on Dec. 8 Lucia Wheele, the local chapter president of “The Pajama Program,” picked up 176 pairs of pajamas and almost as many books, thanks to the generous donations by members of these two units, a new record was set! The pajama program provides a new pair of pajamas and a book to children living in local shelters, group homes, and foster care facilities. “By focusing on a comforting bedtime routine for these children, we seek to help them thrive,” Lucia said. Good nights are good days! If you think you would like to start a pajama drive in your unit, please call Lucia at 602-686-0463, and she would be happy to get you started.

Lovely Ladies Lunch – Unit 44

Jean Harris

A bright November day saw Unit 44 ladies gathering at the home of former Unit member Dawn Razem’s lovely home near her old stomping grounds. Dawn treated the crowd to delicious homemade soup and a spread of Greek food and desserts. In addition to Dawn’s many talents are her glass creations, and she gifted us all with glass hearts in red and green holiday colors. Friends Susan and Kathy helped serve and a good time was had by all.

Unit 44 Men’s Breakfast

Dan Harris

Eleven men from Unit 44 flocked to Eagle’s Nest restaurant on Dec. 4 for their last monthly breakfast of the year—because what better way to end the year than with pancakes and politics? Over plates of bacon and eggs, they (mostly) praised election results and traded stories about their latest “check-engine light” health woes amongst themselves and acquaintances. There was talk of moving the breakfasts to the new Westwind Tavern at PebbleCreek in the new year, but the men decided they’re just not ready to break up with Eagle’s Nest quite yet. After all, why mess with tradition when your bacon is still crispy like you want it? Pictured from left to right are Dan Harris (photographer), Doug Kirkpatrick, Jim Miller, Scott Crabtree, John Arpan, Rick Labasky, Darrell Livingston, Spike Razem, Mark Eichkorn, Bob Olson, and Larry Weber.

Wicked Ladies of Unit 44

Jean Harris

When Peggy Hayner suggested a movie outing to fellow Unit 44 ladies, a few were able to follow the McDowell paved road to the movie about Oz, Wicked. Fun “Friend of Unit 44” Karen Robbins provided the Santa hats and our group saw another PC group (thanks to Connie for our photo). Unit 44 Bunco Sets a Record

Jean Harris

Unit 44’s last bunco night of the year on Nov. 14 set a Unit record for most buncos in a single night. The first four games saw one bunco each, with Janice Kobe being the big winner. Eight strong for this night were: (seated) Peggy Hayner, Deborah Crabtree, and Janice Kobe; (standing) Jody Hoff, Debbie Baron, friend Laura Jamieson, Jean Harris, and friend Karen Robbins.

The brave, talkative, spirited men of Unit 46 who enjoyed their monthly breakfast. Unit 46 Men Enjoy Breakfast

Spike Razem

On the third Wednesday each month the men in Unit 46 gather at Eagle’s Nest Restaurant for breakfast. So, on Nov. 20 there were 13 of us sharing two tables and enjoying the excellent, reasonably-priced cuisine. Most importantly, however, there were some good discussions (i.e., sports, weather, vehicles, landscaping issues, health issues, coyote sightings, etc.), always careful to avoid politics and religion.

And, as is the monthly custom, a few of us are encouraged by (trouble-maker) Don Brzozowski to order a delicious, refreshing Bloody Mary. (This action always seems to quick-start some good conversation.) After 1 1/2 hours of this neighborly bonding, these brave Unit 46 Men unanimously agreed to pose for a group photo—Hooray!

Merry Christmas from Unit 48

Kathleen Ripley Leo

Unit 48 held their Christmas holiday dance in the Tuscany Falls Ballroom with 84 in attendance. Hearty appetizers were luscious treats for neighbors and friends from Unit 48 who dressed in ugly Christmas sweaters or festive holiday apparel complete with antlers or lit necklaces. Unit 48’s coordinators Rochelle Zuckerbrow and Nancy Turner planned it perfectly with a 50/50 raffle, an ugly Christmas sweater competition, and festive apparel competition. American DJ led the dancing and taught a few line dances as well. All had a great time.

Unit 51 Ladies’ Luncheon

Janet Miazga

It was a lovely day in November when 15 gals gathered for our Unit 51 Ladies’ Luncheon. Sandra Adams and Lynn Lucas were our hosts this month and planned our gathering at The Haymaker, where we enjoyed a private room, delicious meals, and a hospitable server. They gave us candy-filled cups, had the tables decorated with pumpkins and gourds, and provided the opportunity for us all to talk about our holiday plans. Another fun get-together for some of Unit 51’s ladies!

Unit 53 Holiday Gathering

Valerie Spiegel

“Wine, women, and DESSERT” (instead of song) was the theme of this Unit 53 gathering in early December. How can one not have a good time with that combination? We thank our two gracious hostesses for a delightful, relaxing afternoon before the holiday rush commenced.

It’s Not Just Pickleball in Unit 58

Ed Raker

The Pickleball Group from Unit 58 gets together weekly on Thursdays at 6 p.m. But it’s not just to play. We all like to party as well, as evidenced by the photo. After an hour or two of games we relax for a happy hour, bringing our own beverages and sharing our snacks with those assembled. It seems that the party is as popular as the games, because the group keeps growing. For more information or if you’d like to join us, connect with Ed Raker at [email protected] or 602-334-6427.

Unit 58 Men’s Breakfast

Ed Raker

No matter what the weather, the day of the week, or the month of the year, the men of the unit 58 men’s breakfast group are undaunted in their quest of the perfect breakfast. They found it again last Nov. 14 in the friendly confines of Eagle’s Nest restaurant. Fifteen of us in all were served very well by a recent addition to the wait staff of Eagle’s Nest, named Faith.

Everything went so well that our gang wanted another go in December, venue to be decided.

Unit 62A Ornament Exchange

Toni Erickson

On Dec. 3, the ladies of Unit 62A gathered on the lovely patio at the Lon’s Restaurant Hermosa Inn located in Paradise Valley for a delicious lunch and a festive ornament exchange. Each participant brought a beautifully wrapped ornament, anonymously tagged, valued between $10 and $15. The group enjoyed a lovely outdoor dining experience, complete with “holiday cheer.” After lunch, the fun continued as everyone drew a number to select their mystery ornament. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with good food, great company, and the joy of giving!

Unit 62A Triumphs with First-Place Finish at Trivia Night

Toni Erickson

The clever minds of Unit 62A put their knowledge to the test on Nov. 20, at Augie’s Sports Bar for an exciting trivia night. This monthly event, organized monthly by Laurie Wyman, has become a tradition for the unit. Laurie ensures a smooth experience by coordinating the evening and managing the limited sign-up of just 14 spots. Thanks to teamwork and quick thinking, Unit 62A emerged victorious, claiming the coveted first-place honors. A big thank you to Laurie for her dedication and to all who participated in making Unit 62A proud.

Unit 62B FALLbulous Luncheon

Judy Freidman

The ladies of Unit 62B gathered in the beautifully decorated Chianti Room for their annual fall luncheon. The tables had a fall leaf wreath with a candle in the middle surrounded by multi colored leaf cookies made by Kathy Worwa. Our luncheon is always a well attended event and this was no exception. Our snowbirds are back and it is a good opportunity to meet our new neighbors and catch up with those we don’t see very often.

After lunch we played an interactive trivia game led by Marie Shubin and Nancy Moore. There were 20 questions in the exam called “Know Your Hood.” Each table had to work together to come up with the correct answer. All the questions were about our knowledge of PebbleCreek (PC). Some of the questions were: How many seats does the Renaissance Theater have? Currently how many official clubs are operating in PC? What was the last official club approved for the community? One table correctly answered 18 of the 20 questions and they are pictured.

With a new year beginning, we are excited to attend new activities and continue our existing friendships and make new ones as well.

Unit 62B Santa Paws

Judy Freidman

Unit 62B held its first Santa Paws event on Nov. 19 at our beautiful new dog park. Santa Claus was there to provide a perfect setting for holiday pictures with our pets. He was a great sport holding the dogs until we got the desired pose. Our furry friends came dressed in their holiday best and they included Oliver, Wiley, Ziggy, Lily, Holly, Max, Dewey, Abby, and Lexi. Treat bags provided by our local Petco were distributed after their pictures. There were a few barks and playful running around, and we knew Santa Paws was a successful afternoon for everyone.

Unit 62B Bunco Babes

Judy Freidman

The 62B bunco group was formed seven years ago after our unit was built out and we were all settled in our new homes. We have been meeting once a month ever since and have some consistent attendees, but other ladies join in when their busy schedule allows. We are holding our red and green holiday customized cookies made by Kathy Worwa that say “Unit 62B Bunco Babes.” The Babes are looking forward to another year of fun, games, and laughs.
