Unit Happenings – April 2024

Unit 6 Enjoys Potluck at Sunrise Park

Residents of Unit 6 gathered for a potluck at Sunrise Park in February. Unit Representative Beverly McCarthy did a great job of organizing the event. Beverly is a new representative for Unit 6, which has been without one for several years. We are grateful to her for volunteering and getting us all together.

Attendees were excited to meet neighbors new and old. As Unit 6 is so large, it was possible to meet and get to know residents we hadn’t met before. The sun shone on the group, and the gathering was deemed a great success by all. Altogether more than 85 people attended. There were copious amounts of delicious food to share along with great conversation.

Beverly circulated a survey asking those attending what their future preferences for gatherings would be. Watch this space! Thank you, Beverly, for a wonderful, enjoyable, and well planned and executed afternoon. The residents of Unit 6 look forward to more fun times together.

Unit 8 Enjoys Cantina Guero

The ladies of Unit 8 experimented with a new restaurant for their February luncheon and proclaimed it a success! We met at Cantina Guero on McDowell for fun and fabulous food and service. Anyone in Unit 8, whether a year-round or seasonal resident, is welcome to join our monthly gatherings. Please contact Jane Holdcroft at [email protected] for more information. Unit 18 Putting Party

John Fox

On Feb. 22, Unit 18 held a putting party on the Eagle’s Nest putting green. The weather we experienced proved to be perfect. It was warm and sunny with a slight breeze. It’s why we chose to live in Arizona.

Eighteen of us came together to find that perfect moment of fun and friendship. Of course, there was a little competition with three of our friends each scoring three holes-in-one. I think we had a few golf “ringers” in our midst.

After completing the rounds, we retired to Eagle’s Nest Restaurant patio for libations, lies, and laughter. As though it couldn’t get any better, we celebrated Sue Higgins’ birthday and enjoyed a sweet slice of Nothing Bundt Cake to round out the evening.

Even now, weeks later, the memory brings a smile to my face. Good times with friends. Could it get any better?

Unit 18 Spring Training at Goodyear Ballpark

John Fox

On March 5, 30 friends and neighbors from Unit 18 joined loyal fans in the yearly ritual known as spring training. For some of us, the moment rekindled our love for baseball, of moments long ago as we played the game with our friends in a local field. For others, it was a chance to get out and spend time doing something different.

In any case, it was wonderful. Parking was free, the lines were short, and we enjoyed watching the preseason game between the Seattle Mariners and the Cleveland Guardians at Goodyear Ballpark. Players signed autographs with fans, held casual conversations with teammates, and occasionally threw a ball to excited groups of boys or girls in the stands.

We enjoyed an elevated experience at the game. Earlier this year, we purchased tickets for two adjoining luxury suites. The suites consist of an indoor serving area offering a simple buffet and an outdoor patio with comfortable chairs and tables overlooking the field. It was casual luxury with a fun relaxed vibe. While fans were enjoying the game on the field, I saw friends reconnecting and savoring this warm spring day. Good times!

My thanks go out to Tim Munson for coordinating this event. It wouldn’t have happened without you.

Unit 20 Lunch and a Birthday

Peggy Pase

The ladies of unit 20 met at Dino’s on Feb. 15 for their monthly luncheon and an impromptu birthday celebration for Maureen Danner. We enjoyed each other’s company, a delicious lunch, and the impressive sparkler candle that was included with Maureen’s dessert! Thanks to Bonnie Wills for the restaurant pick, and apologies to Gail who was omitted from the photo. Last month’s lunch was at Old Chicago where we enjoyed individual pizzas and some time together (despite neglecting to take a photo). Looking forward to where we’ll go next!

Unit 26 Monthly Luncheon

Gena Wikstrom

The ladies of Unit 26 met March 8 for their monthly luncheon. Organized by Colleen McMaster, more than 20 neighbors met at Old Chicago Pizza in Goodyear and enjoyed a casual atmosphere with lots of laughter, great food, and great company! A good time was had by all.

Unit 26 Patio Happy Hour

Gena Wikstrom

Unit 26 gathered at the home of Debbie Vasilofski on Feb. 23 for a patio happy hour. Thirty-five neighbors enjoyed lovely weather, Debbie’s lovely hospitality, lovely appetizers, and exceptional company!

Unit 26 Ladies’ Lunch

Gena Wikstrom

The ladies of Unit 26 met for lunch in February at Wong’s Chinese Restaurant where they enjoyed friendship and conversation, as well as delicious dining. Arranged monthly by Colleen McMaster, the Unit 26 ladies meet at various restaurants with the opportunity to meet new neighbors and enjoy those we’ve known for years. All are welcome!

Unit 27A’s Lively Evening at the Ballpark

Camille Grabb

What could be more beautiful than an Arizona sunset in February? It would be sharing that spectacular view on Leap Day, Feb. 29, at the Goodyear Ballpark with 40 of your neighbors and friends! Unit 27A gathered around tables in the right field pavilion for their 7th annual fun-night ball game outing.

Although our group is gathered from all over the country and supports a variety of home teams, that evening they joined together to support our “local” Cincinnati Reds. The ballpark was a sea of “blue and white” since the LA Dodgers (but, sadly, without their million-dollar pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto) were the visiting team. The Dodgers were no match for the Reds who walked away with a 5 to 4 win.

Lively conversations, burgers and beer, and the 7th-inning stretch and song (including a welcome to our group on the scoreboard) always make for a favorite outing for Unit 27A.

See you all at next year’s fun night!

Unit 27D Plays Golf with Tiger Woods!

Nicki Forbes-Robinson

OK, not exactly with Tiger but at his PopStroke miniature golf course in Glendale. The weather was Arizona’s finest, and we all played below par. OK, not exactly below par but some broke par and we did have many holes-in-one. It’s a smart course layout as there is a bar in the middle of the course. Afterward, we lunched on fish tacos, veggie plates, and hamburgers. It was a fun outing with neighbors in the beautiful sunshine.

Unit 34 Ladies’ Luncheon

A big thanks to Char Morrow and Elna Friesen for hosting the Unit 34 Ladies’ Luncheon at our Eagle’s Nest restaurant. We enjoyed lots of conversation, delicious food, and great service.

Pictured are, front row: Carol Ohman, Carolyn Bates, Barb Mellar; second row: Esther West, Kathy Aalto, Char Morrow, Janell Jenson, Debbie Johnson; third row: Susan Young, Vicki Constable, Alberta Hohn, Diane Buchanan, Amy Cooper, Linda Rouilard, Kris Swanson, Judy Harden, and Josie Montgomery.

Unit 40 Just Because

On Feb. 28, more than 40 residents of Unit 40 met at Eest Asian Bistro in Avondale, resuming our annual “Just Because” dinner tradition. The bistro prepared a delicious buffet meal for us, and Jerry and Helene Hausner, who organized the event, brought a decorated cake that was enjoyed by all.

Villas 43B Ladies’ Brunch

Georgia Horvath

It was so nice to get together with our neighbors for a ladies’ brunch at Eagle’s Nest on Feb. 21 and 22! We had such a great response, we had to have two days since the restaurant limits us to 20. These pictures were taken on the 21st, but I forgot to take pictures of the 16 gals on the 22nd—sorry girls! (Photos by Sandy Horvath)

Jean Harris

Award-winning children’s author Karen S. Robbins, a resident of PebbleCreek, delighted the ladies of Unit 44 and their guests during their monthly luncheon held on Feb. 13 at the home of Jean Harris. Karen shared a bit of her remarkable life’s journey and career, and graciously signed all of her books gladly purchased by the group. If you are not familiar with Karen’s work, visit her website, karensrobbins.com. One highlight is that Karen was the “Miss Karen” on the children’s TV series Romper Room! Her books are available here at PebbleCreek’s Creative Arts Center shop as well as on Amazon.com, Bookshop.org, and barnesandnoble.com. More fun for Unit 44! How lucky are we to live here with amazing ladies!

Unit 44 Enjoys Annual Group Outing to Goodyear Ballpark

Jean Harris

March 2 was a beautiful sunny day at the Goodyear Ballpark for the neighbors and friends of Unit 44. Watching from the Terrace section, the group watched the Kansas City Royals pull off a 13-12 win, scoring 4 runs in the final inning. One highlight was seeing our Unit 44 name on the scoreboard!

The Good Times Roll in Unit 44

Jean Harris

Laissez les bons temps rouler! The good times definitely keep rolling in Unit 44, this time with a neighborhood Mardi Gras-themed party on Feb. 16. On hand were plenty of beads and plenty of food, including Louisiana favorites of muffulettas, sausage jambalaya, and king cakes. There were also costumes and dancing, oh my! A great time with great neighbors and friends.

Unit 44 Ladies Bunco Group Proves They Can Count!

Jean Harris

After months of planning and of reshuffling players and schedules, Unit 44’s Ladies Bunco Group finally rolled up for our first game night on Feb. 22. With the tumbling dice, the ladies found that they can indeed count: number of Buncos, wins and losses, and the hours Queen Jean Merkel stayed at the big table to emerge as the Big Winner. A fun night was had by all—talking, laughing, and enjoying snacks and beverages.

Unit 46 Happy Hour

Vicky Ferraresi

PebbleCreek’s newest unit, Unit 46, had a fun, well-attended Happy Hour on March 7 at the Eagle’s Nest Restaurant. It was a good chance to get acquainted and plan our activities. We traded moving-in stories, who to hire for what service, where we all came from, activities we have tried here, and more. Lots of building is still going on; just under half of the homes are finished and/or occupied. So, we have many more friends to welcome into our group. Many of us stayed on for dinner, and the merriment and camaraderie continued. A special shout-out to Dawn and Spike Razem, who welcomed us into their home at a December gathering (our very first) and pointed us in the right direction as experienced PC residents! Here’s to many more good times ahead.

Unit 48 Spring Training Game

Rochelle Zuckerbrow

Unit 48 enjoyed a day out at the ballpark. Our unit enjoyed an afternoon on the Terrace at a spring training game at the Goodyear Ballpark. We have many residents from Washington, so we thought a Seattle Mariners game would be perfect. We filled the Terrace with 60 of our neighbors. We even got a shout-out on the jumbotron!

Unit 49A Spends the Afternoon at Goodyear Ballpark

Spring is here and the sound of ‘play ball!’ drew 52 residents of Unit 49A to Goodyear Ballpark on March 6 for an afternoon of baseball, food, and friendship. As the Cincinnati Reds hosted the Milwaukee Brewers, residents watched the game from the third floor Terrace overlooking the beautiful ballpark from above home plate. Protected from the hot sun under the Terrace roof, residents dined on a buffet of salad, chicken, hot dogs, mac and cheese, chips, cookies, and sodas. A cash bar also allowed participants to have a cold beer, and a variety of alcoholic beverages. After the game residents were given the opportunity to walk the bases. What a great way to spend a beautiful spring day with neighbors and friends!

Unit 53 Men’s Lunch

The March lunch for the ROMEOs (Really Old Men Eating Out) of Unit 53 was held at Waddell’s. Waddell’s is known for their large servings of french fries with anything on the menu, so it’s a natural favorite of these 10 fine men. No matter where this monthly lunch is scheduled, it provides a wonderful opportunity to get to know our neighbors better.

Unit 53 Women’s Tea

Thirty of the most sophisticated and proper women in Unit 53 celebrated Leap Year’s Feb. 29 with an English Tea. This event gave attendees an opportunity to don their finest frocks, hats, and fascinators and, as seen in this photo, a delightful afternoon resulted. Our two hostesses provided a variety of finger sandwiches, scones, and other delicious snacks one could consume ‘with their pinky up,’ of course.

Unit 54 Valentine Luncheon

Barb Dunson

Dressed for Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14, 18 ladies from Unit 54 dined at PF Chang’s for lunch. It was a nice chance for Hiromi Bashore, who had been long absent from our luncheons, to meet and greet unfamiliar faces and Colleen Brisben, new to the unit, to see the participation of our monthly lunches. In attendance were Joette Lookabaugh, Cindy Hurst, Julie Douglas, Diane Rottman, Patty Klepinger, Dalbir Sudan, Kathy Evans, Pat Gray, Cindy Strong, Nancy Bartush, Julie Kemper, Judy Kettlewell, Helen Limjoco, Sherry Trefz, Sheri Spirek, and Barb Dunson.

Unit 58 Ladies’ Lunch at Times Square

Brenda Deckard, Unit 58 Activities Coordinator

On Feb. 29, Unit 58 held a ladies’ luncheon at the Times Square Restaurant. The Italian food here is always delicious, and service was excellent. We all enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet some new ones. Those in attendance were: Susan Jackson, Connie Mylak, Brenda Deckard, Beverly Kearsley, Susan Conrad, Laurie Miller, Robbie Lowe, Vicky Roelker, Barb Crass, Barb Grant, Sandy Vanstee, Kathy and Dana Dildine, Lee Price, Barb Miller, Vicky Lynch, Deb Janousek, and Pam Buskus.

Unit 60 Men’s Gathering

Sherri Hille

The Unit 60 Men’s Gathering was held on Feb. 21 at the Eagle’s Nest restaurant. Co-chairs Jeff Jacobsen and Wayne Schmidt held the gathering to socialize, meet new community residents, and discuss future ideas for activities.

Unit 62A Ladies’ February Lunch

Toni Erickson

On an unusually warm February day, the ladies of 62A embarked on a delightful outing to the vibrant Scottsdale Quarter/Kierland area. Their destination? The ever-inviting Culinary Dropout, where savory delights awaited amidst the surrounding charm. Before settling in for a leisurely lunch, they treated themselves to a spot of retail therapy, exploring the many shops that lined their path. After indulging their palates with culinary delights, they continued their day with post-meal perusals, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to their outing. Sitting from left to right: Sheryl Lipp, Janelle Watts, Joanne Wrout, Pat Gonzales, Debbie Forte, Julie Greenbank, Toni Erickson, Barb Downey, and Marilyn Coates.

Unit 62A February Happy Hour

The following “baseball fans” gathered around the fire pit, enjoying the scenic pool and golf course setting: Janelle Watts, Barb Downey, Jackie MacKenzie, Lynn Banks, Pat Gonzales, Lori Wyman, Kim Ebert, and Marilyn and Vic Coates.

On Feb. 25, Unit 62A Happy Hour was graciously hosted by former Sheridan neighbors, who are still members of our PebbleCreek community. Having recently relocated to a new residence, they eagerly extended the invitation to their beloved old neighborhood pals. Embracing the spirit of “Spring Training,” their culinary theme centered around classic ballpark fare, featuring a spread of hotdogs, buns, and an array of condiments. Complementing these favorites were additional delights such as baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, and a variety of individual choices, ensuring a festive and satisfying dining experience for all attendees.
