Unit Happenings

Unit 8 Holiday Luncheon

The ladies of Unit 8 celebrated autumn’s arrival at Arribas in early October. Terrific food and ambiance welcomed back several of our members. Our holiday luncheon will be held on Dec. 15—details to be announced. For more info, please contact Jane Holdcroft at [email protected].

Units 22 and 25 Social Event

Betty and Jim Thompson hosted the first social of the season for Unit 22 and 25 on Nov. 3. Everyone was happy to get together to welcome back our snowbirds and meet some new neighbors. We enjoyed great snack food and a birthday cake, which Leroy Stenzel’s wife, Paulette, brought to celebrate his birthday. Naturally he was treated to a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday.” We are looking forward to our next event in January.

Unit 33 Ladies Lunch Bunch

Pat Ingalls

The Unit 33 Ladies Lunch Bunch gathered at Yard House in Glendale’s Westgate Entertainment Center on Oct. 14. Every month we have a new location and a new team of hostesses! October hostesses Flo Slezak and Pat Ingalls welcomed neighbors Sharon Carreyn, Leslie Darden, Mary Ann Gessing, Cindy Gramm, Polly Elliott, Deb Katauskas, Nancy McSwiggan, Oline Shaw, Carol Shipanik, Katy Vidger, Karen Musser, and Jo Werner.

Unit 34 Welcomes Snowbirds Back Home

Because Unit 34 residents are aware of Bob’s career (34+ years) first in retail sales of the Energizer batteries and then serving at the company headquarters, a special guest was invited to the party. Unit resident Kathy Alto escorted the Energizer Bunny to the surprise and delight of all, especially the Youngs.

On Nov. 2, Bob and Susan Young held their annual “Welcome Back” party on their patio on the golf course. Bob and Susan are second Generation residents of PebbleCreek. They built their home in 2005. The Youngs have hosted this patio party for over 10 years. Unit residents look forward to the gathering, and some have even adjusted their return dates in order to mingle with neighbors and friends. This year there were 43 in attendance.

The Youngs are active in the community and Bob has represented Unit 34 for 12+ years as the Unit Contact. He welcomes new residents, maintains email addresses and sends notes out advising of HOA developments, and entertains everyone with the yearly parties. He has also put flags up at every home to celebrate the 4th of July and has encouraged everyone to participate in a competition to win the “Best Holiday Display” at Christmas. Because of these and other activities he is involved in year round, Bob has been dubbed the “Mayor” of Unit 34.

In recognition of all his efforts over the years, residents gave him an award that was engraved with the following passage: “Robert E. Young—Mayor Unit 34 Awarded this representation of his ever burning interest in promoting Community Spirit.” And recognizing Susan’s role in supporting her husband’s activities, she was presented with a bouquet of yellow roses. In addition, both Bob and Susan were awarded monogrammed tall beverage glasses to sustain them through the many social gatherings here in the unit. All the signatures on the cards reflect how appreciative residents are of his activities on their behalf. Many cash donations were made and it was decided to return the money to the unit by donating it in Bob’s name to the Unit’s Sunshine Fund.

Come See the Unit 34 2022 Animated Toy Displays

Bob Young

If you plan to go out and see the lights during the Christmas holidays, please be sure to come over to Unit 34 and enjoy our animated toy displays. All 56 homes in our Unit will have at least one animated toy on their mailbox, and most neighbors will decorate and light up their mailboxes so they can be enjoyed day or night. The toys sing, dance, move around, and light up as well. Children, young and old, enjoy them dearly.

Directions:

Tuscany side, from main gate entrance, take Clubhouse Drive to Sarival; turn right on Sarival to Monterey; Take a right on to Monterey then left or right on 162nd Lane.

We look forward to seeing you!

“Keeping our Villas landscaping beautiful is a year-round effort,” noted Sandy Horvath, PebbleCreek Villas Association Vice President and Landscaping Chairman, “and I need all the help I can get, so I was thrilled when Linda and Art and Carol and Craig volunteered to help with our fall planting project. All four jumped right in, recently marking and placing 140 flags where new plants will be located.”

Linda and Art Saldana are the newest members of the Villas 43B, and will help manage landscape zones 3 and 4. Linda is Carol Maguire’s sister. Carol and Craig will help manage zones 1 and 2. All four fell in love with Villas 43B and want to help keep it a 5-star place to live—and we love having them here!

The men in Unit 44 get together for an Eagle’s Nest breakfast on the first Wednesday each month. The ladies, however, get together each month at their Eagle’s Nest luncheon on the second Tuesday. They also gather for coffee at Portofino’s at 8 a.m. on the last Wednesday of every month.

This past month’s luncheon featured 10 smiling Unit 44 ladies. Being the intrepid Unit 44 reporter, I asked, “How was your time together?”, “Was the food delicious?”, “Any juicy gossip?”

All I could gain from interviewing was: “We all loved fish taco Tuesday. Some even ordered take-home for their husbands (how nice!). And, it was a good information-sharing time. Recommendations were made for various fitness classes and golf lessons.”

Sorry, no juicy scandalous gossip to report. Darn! Maybe something more revealing will be included in future PebbleCreek Post issues. Stay tuned.

Unit 49A Socials

Unit 49A residents enjoying appetizers

Robin Macik

As Unit 49A continues to grow, we are having a lot of fun meeting our new neighbors. A small group of 25 started the fall season off with a breakfast at Eagle’s Nest. We welcomed six new residents and welcomed back a few snowbirds.

The big gathering was on Oct. 29 when 50 neighbors, some new and more snowbirds, socialized while snacking on appetizers. As always, there was more food than we could eat. During the social the new residents were introduced and some upcoming socials were announced.

A Holiday Dinner Party in the Chianti Room was planned for Nov. 30. Bunco will take place on the third Wednesday in December, and mahjongg is held every week.

The social committee is busy planning some fun socials for 2023, such as a chili cook-off, putters game, and crazy bocce (no Easter eggs this time around), along with monthly game night and bunco.

If you happen to live in Unit 49A and are not receiving our emails about upcoming socials, please contact Robin Macik at [email protected] or 623-203-4068 (call or text).

Unit 51 Ladies’ Luncheons

Janet Miazga

Our November Unit 51 Ladies’ Luncheon was enjoyed by 18 neighbor gals, some of whom we hadn’t seen since last spring. It was great to get together again and catch up on what’s been happening. Hostesses Sandra Adams and Lynn Lucas made a great choice with PF Chang’s—we all enjoyed our meals along with our conversations. And the candy treats they provided went perfectly with our fortune cookies!

One could tell that fall had arrived when we saw the beautifully decorated table at the Old Chicago Pizza & Tap Room restaurant on Oct. 12. The ladies from Unit 51 knew that was our reserved table for our monthly luncheon—hostesses Dee Domingo and Nelda Peterson had done a lovely job with colorful pumpkins and gourds, orange leaf garlands and flowers, along with delicious mini Bundt cakes. Eleven neighbor friends enjoyed getting together and welcoming in the autumn season.

Unit 52 Welcome Back Party

Liz Gibson

Over 60 residents of Unit 52 enjoyed a Welcome Back Street Party on Oct. 22 on the cul-de-sac at Holly Street and 165th Drive.

Planned by the social committee headed by Chair Rhae Jean Magnuson, everyone brought an appetizer to share, drinks of their choice, and chairs.

The large common area between Alvarado Dr. and 165th Dr. is the perfect setting for informal get-togethers, and everyone had a great time mixing with old friends and a number of new residents.

The next Unit 52 event will be our annual Holiday Party in early December.

Unit 53 Ladies’ Gathering

JoAnne Braun hosted a fun ladies’ gathering on Oct. 26. Her home was decorated from top to bottom for Halloween with an island laden with snacks and beverages. Danielle Lightner, a neighbor in Unit 53, worked as the gemologist for Tiffany’s in Hawaii and shared her expertise and a few entertaining stories of her experiences during her tenure there. The afternoon was an interactive, hands-on, fun gathering and an opportunity to be with neighbors and welcome those new to Unit 53.

Halloween Hijinks in Unit 58

Many of the assembled guests

Ed Raker

In what is beginning to be a yearly tradition, on Oct. 29, residents of Unit 58 gathered to celebrate Halloween 2022. The creativity in the costumes seems to get better with each passing year. Nearly 50 revelers assembled at the home of Ed Raker and Lynn Jacobson, where they enjoyed each other’s culinary skills as well as the latest in masquerades. No judges were involved in rewarding the best costumes. Instead, a popular vote decided that the best female costume was worn by Karen Linth, a very cute but scary witch. Her husband David took top honors as Julius Caesar. Michael and Ruth Topp won the best couple award as a pair of Green Bay Packers “cheese heads.” And honorable mention went out to Bob and Patrice Cole, as competing insurance salespeople Jake from State Farm and Flo from Progressive.

The Unit 60 Ladies’ Luncheon was held on Oct. 21 at the Tuscany Falls Capri Room. Forty-six women attended, and each attendee provided a bit of information about themselves, enjoyed a delicious lunch, and many made new acquaintances.

Unit board chair Barb Stampke provided updates regarding plastic bag collection, food donations, and upcoming Unit 60 events.

Unit 62A did a repeat performance playing Trivia at Augie’s on Oct. 26. The intellectuals participating that night were Bruce and Lynn Banks, Laurie Wynman, Tim and Dale Scanlon, Gerry Hibbard and Paula Hupka, Tom and Jackie MacKenzie, Vic and Marilyn Coates, Jim Downey, Mike and Cathe Pruyn, and Patti Trapp. Besides enjoying delicious food, this group brought home a respectable 4th place win! We anticipate that this event will show up more frequently on our social calendar, so look out trivia wizards!

62A Halloween Happy Hour

Once again, 62A neighbors gathered at Laurie Wyman’s home for spooky music and “trick or treats” on Oct. 29. Many rose to the occasion and wore Halloween costumes reflecting their personalities, such as tourists characterized by Lynn and Bruce Banks. Like all other monthly happy hours, everyone brings an appetizer to share and beverage of their choice.
