Unit Happenings

Unit 3 neighbors enjoying a spring fling

Unit 3 Spring Fling

Linda Babcock

On the evening of March 24, several neighbors in Unit 3 gathered for a spring fling. We met at 5 p.m. on the patio of Rosati’s in Avondale. The evening was perfect with great weather and a great variety of pizza, salads, and bread sticks. Our neighbors all enjoyed their personal selection of adult beverages or soda, and we ended with cupcakes and selected cookies and candies. There was a raffle, which was won by lucky Rita Gay Levine. Then we gathered on the patio around the fire pit, with additional tables pulled together. Conversation was lively and laughter was nonstop. This was an event everyone enjoyed, and we look forward to our next unit gathering.

One sentiment was shared that we decided should be our motto: “With time, women gain weight because we accumulate so much knowledge and wisdom in our heads that there is no more room in there, and it is distributed to the rest of our bodies. So we aren’t heavy, we are enormously educated, cultured, and happy. Beginning today, when I look in the mirror I will think, ‘Good grief … look how smart I am!’”

Unit 8 Luncheon

Members of Unit 8 gathered on a beautiful spring day for lunch with friends at the Verrado Grill. We had terrific food and a chance to gather in friendship!

Unit 27A Sets Sail!

All aboard and ready for castoff! On Tuesday afternoon, April 5, Unit 27A neighbors and friends (24 of them!) drove way across to town to Apache Junction, including 16 miles of switchback roads. They boarded the Dolly Steamboat for a leisure 1-1/2 hour paddleboat ride on Canyon Lake. It was perfect weather with picture-perfect scenery, and the day sparked plenty of great conversations.

After the enjoyable ride, the group gathered for an early supper a few miles down the road at The Tortilla Flats Saloon.

It was another wonderful Unit 27A outing day!

Unit 44 Hits a Home Run!

Spike Razem

Despite the threat of a Major League Baseball lockout, then a revised Spring Training schedule, our Unit 44 residents were able to successfully organize a fun event at the ballpark on March 24.

We had 45 neighbors and a few guests enjoying the third floor Terrace Section at Goodyear Ballpark to cheer on the Cleveland Guardians vs. Seattle Mariners. Our buffet lunch included some delicious nachos, pulled pork, shredded chicken, hot dogs, salads, and more. And of course, the cash bar provided some special beverages to keep our group enthusiastic, talkative, and lively. We were featured celebrities when the center field scoreboard flashed a “Special Welcome PebbleCreek Unit 44” during the 4th inning. And, the ballpark’s mascot, “Ace,” made a special appearance to say “hi” (although not vocally) and graciously pose in multiple photos with those of us who certainly weren’t camera-shy. The game itself was very entertaining, as the hometown Guardians lost a close one by the score of 3-2.

Unit 44 is one of PebbleCreek’s newest units, with more new neighbors arriving every month. Because of the fantastic participation and fun experience in getting neighbors together, this Spring Training event will most likely stay on our Social Committee‘s planning calendar for many years to come.

Hooray for Spring Training, and let’s keep the good times rolling in Unit 44!

Crazy bocce winners

Unit 49A Has Been Busy!

Robin Macik

On March 13, residents met at the Oasis Pool and had a barbecue. Chefs Tim and Bill did a great job with the hot dogs and hamburgers, and everyone else brought sides and desserts. Everyone had a great time socializing with their neighbors.

On April 2, 40 residents gathered to play a little crazy bocce. About half of the residents had never played bocce ball, so they learned the game while having a little fun. Five rounds were played, and in one round they actually rolled Easter eggs and did the Chicken Dance. The winning team of Tim & Judy DeGeorge and Chuck & Barb Busker scored 7 points and shut out the other team. For their efforts, they were awarded a Crazy Bocce First Place Certificate and a colorful pinwheel.

After playing bocce, everyone sat down to enjoy sub sandwiches, chips, and ice cream.

Coming up is a Cinco de Mayo party and an Eagle’s Nest breakfast in June.

Unit 54 Ladies’ Luncheon

Barb Dunson

Eighteen ladies from Unit 54 enjoyed wonderful lunch options at Papa Paul’s Brick Oven Pizza & Pasta in Litchfield Park on Tuesday, March 29. There were some familiar faces and three new additions to our monthly activities. The weather that day was a drop of 30 degrees from Sunday. Initially we were planning on dining outdoors, but winds and cooler temps moved us indoors. Kathy Magee, Barb Dunson, Patty Vitale, Christa Bakarich, Cindy Strong, Joette Lookabaugh, Pat Gray, Judy Kettlewell, Judy Vogt, Michelle Moskos, Patty Klepinger, Gloria Rathman, Kathy Cheek, Julie Kemper, Debi Strata, Kathy Evans, Kayrene Braden, and Julie Douglas were in attendance.

Unit 58 Honors St. Patrick

Susan Kice

The Unit 58 monthly cocktail party was filled with smiles! The March hosts were Bill and Barbara Grant, who graciously offered their home as the venue. To add even more élan to the festivities, the outing was held to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day. “Wearing of the green” was the order of the day, and a great time was had by all!

Unit 60 residents celebrated the Luck of the Irish on March 17 while getting to know each other better and meeting some of their newest neighbors at the beautiful Oasis Pool. We look forward to meeting new neighbors and having many more gatherings in homes, driveways, and PebbleCreek venues. Unit 60 residents may contact Barb Stampke, Unit 60 social chair, with ideas for gatherings and events! Email her at [email protected].

One week after Portofino reopened, neighbors of 62A decided to make this an informal get-together on the second Monday of each month.

It is another opportunity to support our great community by sharing fellowship and money at one of our local amenities!

Unit 62A Hand, Knee, and Foot Afternoon

Toni Erickson

Ladies of Unit 62A enjoyed an outdoor afternoon playing Hand, Knee, and Foot at the Oasis Pool Ramada under the canopy. When everyone brings their cards already shuffled, it makes for a pleasantly quiet time while enjoying cards and conversation in the beautiful elements provided through our HOA facilities.

Unit 62B St. Patrick’s Day Dinner

Judy Freidman

On a perfect spring day, Unit 62B hosted a St. Patrick’s Day dinner at the Oasis Pool ramada. We had a wonderful turnout. We met lots of new neighbors and were able to reconnect with the “old timers.” It’s been over two years since we were all able to have a big party.

We had a delicious, catered buffet-style dinner with dessert of Shamrock cookies in keeping with our St. Patrick’s Day theme. The majority of the guests were dressed in green, and a great time was had by all.

Upon check-in, guests were given a raffle ticket with a chance to win gift cards of varying amounts to local restaurants and a grand prize to Babbo Italian Eatery. Our grand prize winner was Rob Kraft, dressed in full-on leprechaun attire.

Erin Go Bragh!

Unit 62B Golf Scramble

The ladies of Unit 62B held their semi-annual golf scramble on April 7, playing nine holes on Tuscany East. We enjoyed a friendly afternoon of golf, then convened at Toscana’s to award prizes. Closest to Pin and Longest Putt were won by J. Wittmus. Longest Drive was won by Dale Ellis. Our thanks to the following Goodyear businesses for the game prizes and raffle items: VAN’s Golf Shop, Roman’s Oasis, Tailgaters, and Old Chicago.
